Aeclectic Tarot American Convention - Where? When?

Three cheers for Aeonx, whose great idea it was to have an Aeclectic Tarot Convention! ;D ;D ;D

While Aeonx, Pollux, and others are working on a European Convention in Naples, Italy, I thought those of us here in the States could get our heads together about a time and place for an American Convention!

So all those who are interested in a few days of fun, fellowship, and Fool-ishness with other Aeclectics, let your wishes be known here! A few of us following Aeonx's original Convention thread (called "Welcome!") thought we should start new posts for each convention and find out who would want to come.

So...Would you come to a convention? If so, where do you suggest we hold it? Our first suggestion has come from Jewel, who voted for her own neck of the woods: Sedona, Arizona. (Also, if you know of a website for your choice of place for the American Convention, that would be helpful for the rest of us to see.)

Second, when should it be held? Can we get everything together for a Convention this fall, or should we wait until Spring of 2003?

Lastly, can you help at all with organizing our Convention? As you can see, I'm a good instigator, ;) and I can do some of the data gathering stuff, but that's about all I can handle. :D

You can also email me if you want to vote that way instead of in this thread. (Just click on the email-thingy under my name at left. ;) ) I'll keep this thread updated with all the time and place ideas submitted.

So...what do you all think?

Peace,

Melvis

I'm from the east coast but I would LOVE to go to Sedona, Arizona. I've wanted to visit for a long time and I've also wanted to attend a tarot conference. I missed one in Albany, NY last year due to family medical situations.

Depends on costs, though. One of my children is headed for college in the fall.

I do have some experience planning and chairing a conference (in 1995 I chaired a 2 day writers' conference on the east coast that registered 300 writers, 40 editors and agents, 30 workshops, a bookfair, banquet meals, etc.) but a person who knows they'll definitely be able to attend should chair a planning committee.

A few days ago I was reading of plans for a conference--can't remember whether it was a tarot or astrology conference, but I do remember being unimpressed with the hotel room costs that had been negotiated. Plus, the price negotiated was based on sharing with another person, who you might or might not know, and it STILL wasn't a good price. I dunno, maybe the organization wasn't non-profit and factors in a financial benefit to itself, either that or they don't attract enough registrants to negotiate a good price for room and meals. Maybe they were paying their speakers. Who knows? Anyway, just seemed like there would have to be ways to make it less expensive.

What about in 2004?

This way, we could begin a series of Conventions/Conferences around the world.

2003 Europe (Naples)
2004 USA
2005 Melbourne (Aust.)
2006 ?

It would also mean that some of us may be able to attend various ones as we save our pennies.

I like JMD's idea. Otherwise we have to choose.... The USA convention, or the Europe one? I'd rather do both, but having it in the Spring of next year won't give us enugh time to save up for the next one.... Go on, give us Europeans a chance!

And for 2006, how about the UK? Then we have the four main places where the Aeclectic neties come from convered!

Hi Gang. Just FYI Sedona is not my neck of the woods *LOL*. Just a very spiritual place that I thought would be perfect for this sort of conference. There are a few New Age stores there (one is huge and even has Shamanic tours and such). Sedona is simply a very spiritual place, and for those of us here in the US that are Pagan, would be a great opportunity to visit the Vortexes there. Also, the Grand Canyon is about 4 hours from Sedona driving ...

Jewel: Oops! I assumed that you lived there when you talked about Sedona...and you know what 'assuming' makes me! ;)

JMD: I suppose that's a good idea about waiting until 2004, but I don't know if I can wait *that* long! :D ;D

Kalin: One other reason I thought Sedona might be a good place for a convention is that it sounded like there were good camping opportunities in that area. That might solve some of the hotel cost problems for some people. It would also allow those who want to get a little closer to nature to do so.

Any other ideas out there?

Peace,

Melvis

No problem Melvis :P The one draw back I see for Sedona is that I am not quite sure what the closest airport is ... when I went I flew into Phoenix and we had to drive.

I think 2004 is realistic, it takes time to plan these things and to get good rates. This might also allow time to solicit some good presenters if we wanted to do a workshop day ... who knows if we can gain the support of some reputable metaphysical store maybe they could help sponsor by helping us get some named authors or something ... it never hurts to ask. I am just brainstorming here.

Hi guys,
I am so psyched about this. Sedona sounds beautiful. I am looking in my "Let's Go USA" guidebook, which is for budget (cheap) travelers.
I think the nearest airport would be in Phoenix, Sky Harbour Internat'l.
There are some campgrounds, too, in the Coconino Nat'l Forest (520) 527-3600.
Another idea, if it's not too out of the way, is in Salt Lake City, Utah. There is the Summum Pyramid meditation center, which is a huge pyramid aligned with the four directions, with crystals at the four corners.
www.saltlake.org
.
Also, we should rent booth space to vendors and readers to raise money to pay for the speakers. I know Joya said that Nancy Brady Cunningham (co-author of "Tarot Celebrations" is a friend of her mother. Maybe we could get her to speak.
I would be willing to do work to help organize and stuff.
I'm really looking forward to it!

YAY! i'd love to see us americans host a smaller convention or something. i love the idea of a Global convention, but unfortunately my budget is too small for any amount of worldly travel the new few years.

Sedona, AZ...hmmm... i may be able to finagle a way down there somehow.

then again, i'd love to see everyone maybe in the future road-trip it up here to the pacnorthwest... seattle, or portland? =)

should we start some sort of coordination for this or wait?

ready and willing to help.
blessed be.

So are there any plans for our american convention in Sedona? I just resurrected this thread b/c I hadn't seen anthing about it in quite a while! Is anyone still working on this? Is there a date?
If this has turned out to be too big for one person to handle, perhaps we could start smaller, perhaps regional conventions (Northwest coast, Southeast, New England, Mid-America, etc.). I'm still really looking forward to it!
Thanks,
DeLani

Regional might be a good idea, start small... I like the idea of big ones once a year in various contries too. I am from MD but I could possibly make it to Salem, and it seems like a natural choice, plenty of local vendors etc. That's just off the top of my head.

lunalafey  11 Mar 2003
I had thought about an AT gathering, did not know this thread existed....Arizona is a good idea, best weather in the states during the winter...70-80 degrees. In all fairness to those on the coasts, a central location would would be more accesable to all, say Colorado, Cave of the Winds, Mesa Verde, Garden of the Gods....some sights in the area... but...Mount Shasta..(in my nick of the woods) is a awsome powerful energy spot....

What about that European convention, where is that posted. I am dying to have a good excuse to go to Italy, hint hint.

Has anyone ever been to Sedona??? It is a beautiful site, but pricey! I suspect they charge for camping also, as this site has gone through some significant changes in the past couple of years.
What will be the goal of the session, get together, exchange of readings, speakers, vendors??
I like jlvt's idea of a regional get together. Or perhaps we could alternate years on each coast.
There is a convention of the American Tarot Association May 30 through June 1, 2003 in Portland, OR
Here is their site if anyone is interesting in looking.....

I'm interested......any time to meet kindred spirits is a good time, looking forward to hearing haha seeing more on this...
