Tarot Goals, 2004

So, with all the New Years resolutions that we dont/do make, what are your Tarot goals for this year? Do you even set goals for yourself like that with tarot?

Mine are - to study the Thoth deck in-depth this year. It's not a deck I'm particularly drawn to, but I think it will deepen my knowledge of the tarot in general. I plan on doing the same with a Marseilles deck next year.

To keep my deck purchases to one a month. (ACK!)

To do at least a weekly card draw, even if I can't quite manage a daily draw.

ros  09 Jan 2004
I'm going to try the Thoth deck this year also. I think we'll have lots to learn!

Sulis  09 Jan 2004
My main goal is to be able to read for people face to face. I hope by the end of the year I'll be able to do it but I just don't have the confidence yet.

Love and light

Sulis xx

~X~  09 Jan 2004
My tarot goals for this year are:

1. To clear up my confusion over numerology and come up with a cohesive way to read non-scenic pip decks.

2. Get to know the decks I have that have been sitting for a long time gathering dust. Medieval Scapini and Haindl are the two main ones.

3. Continue to be choosy about the decks I buy. There was a time my "wish" list was about 40 decks long. Amazing how even after a few weeks, certain decks lose their appeal. I haven't purchased a deck in 4 months. Don't laugh, that's a long time for me. :D An off shoot of this would be to spend more time becoming a better reader and less time checking out decks.

3. My ultimate goal is to be able to read with ANY deck. Doubt it will happen this year, but that's the plan.

To master the Marseilles

J :)

Huld  09 Jan 2004
1. To become more comfortable with live readings. I live in a pretty isolated spot and so my readings are usually done via email, I have no one to practice on where I live and so I am a bit nervous about doing face to face readings.

2. Learning more about astrology and learning to better incorperate it in with my Tarot readings.

3. Learning to know the decks I already own, picking one or two and becoming *really* familiar with them instead of jumping around from deck to deck all the time.

4. Not buying any new ones. I have nearly forty decks now, I guess that is enough! At least my fiance thinks so! :))

Huld

ultraviolet  09 Jan 2004
Here are my goals:

1. I want to spend a lot of time with the Universal Waite deck. I'm not sure if I'll ever do readings with it, but I do find it interesting to study and learn from.

2. I want to deal with my fear of reading for people that I don't know. Much like Sulis, I want to become comfortable doing readings face to face. I need to build up confidence.

3. I want to be consistent with spending time with my cards and writing in my journals. (This should be a relatively easy goal for me since it's all I ever want to do anyway.)

Hmmmmmmmm..........

Well, I've already started one goal and that is to be more assertive with what I "see" and not cringe..... Just put it out there. I have been practicing by writing my post for Your Readings requests before I read the responses of others..... very interesting...... ;)

The other goal is to seriously explore the idea/desire to draw my own Tarot Deck or Oracle Deck.....

Majecot  09 Jan 2004
Ok here is mine

I am going to spend more time studying my cards, I am finding the comparative studys very helpful, so that I know them better.

I am going cut way back on buying all those beautiful decks and get to know the ones I already have.

I want to work on my fear of reading for strangers. I can do face to face for friends and family but no strangers.( I am with Sulis and ultraviolet on that one, I am still working on the shyness part)

I am going to try to become more disiplined when it comes to my journal.. and keeping records of my readings.

ultraviolet  09 Jan 2004
4. I want to become more involved in the tarot community, both here at Aeclectic and in my city. I have passed up way too many opportunities and it is time for me to change that behavior. I am finding more and more that I benefit greatly from sharing my voice.

HudsonGray  09 Jan 2004
I'm going to try doing another deck this year, a cat one, though I know CatDoc and Baba-Prague beat me to it already. But I'm still going to do one based on some ideas I've got. The images are still in the gel stage though. All I have clearly is sketches for the Queen of Swords.

Nothing in color yet, this will be a black & white deck similar to the Ferret Tarot. I'm waffling between a more cartoony approach and a realism approach. My sig. other keeps reminding me of the reactions I got from the mailmen to the cartoons I'd done on some envelope art I did 3 years ago. He wants me to stick with that style--the clerks at the post office all wanted to read each 'installment' I brought in.

Star Spirit  09 Jan 2004
My tarot goal for this year is to read for people in person. And do a damn good job of it.

And to keep studying and practicing, and never give up :D

snuffy  09 Jan 2004
i love this idea (tarot goals) :)

i want to be good. hehe. good, as in people will drop their jaws and scream in surprise when they hear my accurate readings.

(getting down the "meanings" of cards without having to lean on thirteen's tarot basics as a crutch would work nicely for starters, though! baby steps, i need to take baby steps.)

MoreMagic  09 Jan 2004
To incorporate Tarot into my figurative artwork, with the intention of maybe, someday, maybe, just thinking about a 3 dimensional representation of the deck...

WolfyJames  10 Jan 2004
I've never been good at keeping resolutions, but I'll make my best. Here are my resolutions:

1 - To be a better reader and to study tarot more seriously. I'm getting Seven degrees of wisdom by Pollack, so I want to read and study it throughrouly.

2 - To make daily draws. I had started but I stopped. I want to keep going. Daily draws are excellent practice.

3 - To finish to make the bags for my tarots and oracles.

4 - To try to read without using my books and notes.

5 - To work, and possibly finish, the tarot I want to make.

I think it's all I can think of.

Moonbow*  10 Jan 2004
My Tarot Goals?

1. Keep learning my Marseilles deck and reading with it

2. Keep up the 78 week study. This will be hard in the summer for me

3. Keep up my card a day - Faerie at the moment - may change

4. Keep soaking up information from anywhere

5. Do more readings

6. Keep up my meditation and dreamwork with Tarot

Moonbow*

miss_apples  10 Jan 2004
My tarot goal is to keep written record of at least some of the readings I give for people so that I can grow from them.

That would be nice. I don't know if I could call it a goal for myself, but I would like to get there :D. My goal, however, is to sit, look at the 42 cards spread I know, and be able to tell the story. That is my goal...wish me luck :smoker:

Blessings,
Agathe

SilverClaw  10 Jan 2004
For me I have set the goal of reading all the tarot books I have and practice more spreads that I have never toatly understodd liek the Tree of life.

And finish all the tarot courses I am taking especailly the 11 month one.

Aerten  10 Jan 2004
Well, I didn't make any resolutions or anything but now that you mention it, tarot resolutions sounds like a good idea, cos I'm one of those people who will start things and not finish it.

I guess I only have one goal, and that would be to apply the lessons I learn from tarot to real life more frequently. I only really heed the advice of the cards when it's the lazier course of action...

Ruby7  10 Jan 2004
Work with the decks that I have.

Meditate every day with one tarot card.

Experiment with different spreads ( I tend to do a lot of 3-card spreads and the celtic cross only)

And that's about it, Ruby7

Melvis  10 Jan 2004
MoreMagic: Yes, please do create some 3-dimensional tarot artwork! I've always thought a tarot theme would be great for a multi-media art exhibit!

My goals this year are pretty simple. I've recently moved to another apartment in my building, and now I have a room for all my books and tarot, so I may start reading for people face-to-face; most likely friends, and friends of friends.

I also want to concentrate my deck purchases this year on self-published decks. (Disclaimer: This does not include the decks I pre-order from Tarot Garden, or, for that matter, the other decks I purchase along with those pre-orders when the latter are ready to ship! ;) Hmmm...I'm sure I'll have a few more disclaimers on this one before the year's through!)

I also want to spend more time with the decks I have, since there are quite a few that I have neglected.

Happy Tarot in 2004, everyone!

Peace,

Melvis

galadrielsphial  10 Jan 2004
My tarot resolutions (which I will hopefully keep better than my regular ones):

Spend more quality time with my decks, studying their imagery and seeing what kind of reaction I have to them without reading what the book says first. I neglected them when I started graduate school and even over my winter break (though not as much), and I want to change that.

Trying different spreads than the three card and drawing of a single card...I need to branch out! My Fairy Ring Oracle has several interesting spreads, plus I have seen a lot of intriguing ones here on Aecletic.

Refrain from buying any more decks, which actually shouldn't be that hard because I'm picky. (Six deck girl :))

Keep a written record of my readings and feelings about the cards so I have something to refer back to and learn from.

Cerulean  10 Jan 2004
-To experiment with or develop a new spread

-Improve my reading skills

-Enjoy different art styles and apply it to my own poetry or art projects

-Keep or clear out, so the evolving collection and learning stays fresh and relaxing

-Hope to find some of the delightful 2004 titles and book combinations....which include the Golden (deck and book), Restored Order (book), Medieval Scapini (book), Golden Tarot of the D'Estensi, and Eden Tarot...there are others, but I'm curious and hopeful to hear about them from others. I'm most curious about my top five so far....although I did see on Amazon.com Kay Steventon is putting out a new title with Brian Clark called the Celestial Tarot...I guess the UK collectors will see it first.

TemperanceAngel  10 Jan 2004
To get new decks, Thoth Crowley and maybe even the Marseilles *gasp*....

To start a Tarot website.

To help out with the Melbourne Tarot Conference 2005.

To expand my Tarot world (meaning everyting).

To run more Tarot workshops.

To learn more from Aeclectic.

To give thanks for all of these things and whatever else presents itself :)

Nevada  10 Jan 2004
A few of my current and ongoing Tarot goals:

1) Get a Marseilles deck and begin learning it.

2) Do more readings for others.

3) Keep learning.

4) Design my own Tarot cards (at least a few images--I don't think I'll complete a deck anytime soon).

5) Work out some ideas I have for new spreads. Experiment with them, get them to a comfortable state to use and share with others.

This is a good idea to write your Tarot Goals down - helps to focus on what you would like to achieve for the year. Doesn't matter if you achieve all of them, helps to have a plan!

~ Spend more time on tarot in general ! Particularly my new deck.

~ Learn more, and more - have 78 Degress of Wisdom on order and a few other book titles on the "wish list"

~ Spend as much time as I can on Aeclectic - learning and sharing - joining in on some of the study groups

~ Come out of the "closet" in regards to Tarot with friends and colleagues. Have kept that part of my life fairly secret for many years except from family and very close friends. Have always kept my tarot "stuff" locked away from general view when friends come to visit - but have now set up my Tarot Corner at home and it is amazing the positive feedback (instead of the expected shocked and raised eyebrows I was expecting). Actually found a friend who has wanted to get into Tarot - having first Tarot afternoon tomorrow!

~ Continue to work on my Tarot photography - arty black and whites and colour shots of tarot cards and spreads - that hopefully tell a story in the photograph... :-)

~ Do more readings - and experiment with new spreads and types of reading

oooh - the list is getting longer now that I think about it - LOL

~ Start second Tarot journal. (First journal was last year's goal - collected all the different meanings, interpretations and symbolism from many different tarot books and wrote them into my own journal - images and a couple of pages on each card - so that I don't have to go digging - all in the one place. Found it a great learning experience and a creative outlet.

I think I had better leave it at that, otherwise I won't have any time for family, work etc ! Sorry about the length everyone :-)

my main goal is to become more intuitve with the cards currently im about half intuitive and half book reliant. i am also going to work on seeing the whole picture with the cards and reading more as a story.

wildinthemist  23 Jan 2004
Deal with those pesky court cards. I avoid them year after year, and in fact I spent months one year working out arguments for why they are irrelevant in tarot. Now there is avoidance at work for you LOL. So .... this is the year!

Orion  23 Jan 2004
I definately want to expand my collection of Tarot cards. I certainly need to work on live readings!

Lightbringer  23 Jan 2004
Buy all or almost all the decks on my wish list. Hope to have enough money...
Be more confident in my readings (by following my intuition and not thinking it is just not worthy of mentioning).
Enrich my tarot knowledge with the sutdy of numerology.
Grasp the meaning of some cards that still puzzle me when they show up in certain positions.

:D

baba-prague  23 Jan 2004
Okay, the truth is I want to finish two decks this year. One is ours - which we want to be the first really readable cat tarot, one with symbolic depth but also beauty and fantasy. It's a tall order and we have often been close to giving up on this one. We set out to do something almost like the film "Amadeus" - with cats (and without a film crew!) Maybe it's over-ambitious, but we are getting there. This deck is coming to mean a lot to me.

The other deck is one that is principally by a very renowned elderly artist here. We are simply going to act as editors and publishers (though "editing" will involve a great deal of work from both the graphic and the tarot perspective). He wants one last retrospective of his work - and the deck would act in that way for him. His work is incredible. I fell totally in love with it when I found a deck of cards he made in 1967 in a junk shop here. Wonderful - a true artist and craftsman.
Again though, this deck is a tall order and one that is stretching us in many senses.

If we can manage both this year - and the results are - to quote William Morris - beautiful AND useful - I will be one happy person!

CreativeFire  19 Apr 2004
Here we are in April already so thought I would give this thread a ** bump ** as I remember being all excited about what my tarot goals would be for 2004, which is great, however sometimes it is a good idea to go back and revisist them. Just to refocus to (1) check on the progress I have made (or not made!) and (2) add any new goals.

Have definitely been spending more time on tarot in general (some of my other interests have suffered miserably) but I am enjoying myself immensely. I had a bit of chuckle with "particularly my new deck" - I have to change that now to DECKS :D as I have acquired a few more since then.

Well I got 78 Degrees and also quite a few other books as well that I am using now for study! I have also got a few more on order now as well
Quote:

Well I have become slightly addicted to AT and spend far more time on the computer than I ever have LOL. I am still participating in the 78 Weeks of Study so that is a good thing.

I have certainly come a long way with this! Closet - what closet :D All my tarot "stuff" is now definitely "out" at home and now have a few friends who i can "talk" tarot with as well. I still do keep it a bit under my hat in my work environment but I am happy with that.

I have not done as much on the photography side as I would have liked, but the Thoth has certainly inspired me a bit in this direction - something to work on here. ;)
Quote:
~ Do more readings - and experiment with new spreads and types of reading
I certainly have been doing more readings face to face and have even ventured to doing a few online here at AT, which I plan to get more practice at when I can.

I am about half way through my second journal as I have been writing in my notes from the 78 week study and other great info that I have picked up along the way, especially from AT and reading the cards themselves.

New Goal: Don't buy any more decks until the Gilded is released later in the year! Focus, study and read with the ones that I have at the moment and not get too carried away acquiring new ones :D

Anyone else like to revisit their goals and see how they are progressing and add any new ones?

Gerbear  19 Apr 2004
For 2004;

Finish at least the majors of the deck I'm creating,

Attend at least one regional, or national Tarot gathering,

Become more familiar with the Marseilles,

Acquire a better intuitive grasp of tarot symbolism,

Expand my collection to at least 500 decks.

That's about it for this year.

diane drizzy  19 Apr 2004
To learn to be more intuitive
To learn more about myself from my cards
To feel more comfortable reading for others

contrascarpe  19 Apr 2004
Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner. Guess it is never too late to set goals, but in retrospect I feel I have grown so much since January that I probably would have already achieved my goals. I would like set my goals fairly simply - to continue to grow and learn everyday.

I have already achieved one of my two regular Resolutions (a work goal) and am well on my way in another (weight loss). I guess one other Tarot Goal would be to finally get myself in a setting where I can give readings to complete strangers, face to face. Hopefully that one is not too far off .......

Ravenswing  19 Apr 2004
I need to stop collecting and start using-- books and decks.

Turn off the rational and turn on the intuitive...

Keep the pace going with my system-- somewhere about a card every two weeks. Finished and polished up by the end of 2006...

quite enough here

Phoenix Rising  19 Apr 2004
Basically be more confident with reading with people face to face. And I'm going to do a stall too, just jump in the deep end.

Finding a deck that I just click with and can use as a all purpose reading deck. I've just got Robin Wood and Universal Waite is coming tomorrow.

However I have been given a message by 2 very excellent clairvoyants, that i need to stop too much head stuff. Like studying and wanting to get to the nitty gritty of the cards. That I need to feel more rather than think.

VGimlet  20 Apr 2004
I've revised my goals a bit since I posted this. :P But I'm working on them, which is forward progress, no matter how small.

study the Thoth deck in-depth this year
One goal I have steadily worked on - I'm almost finished with the minors, and going to start on the majors. The court cards are taking me about 2 days each, and I have a feeling the majors will be at least three, maybe four.

To keep my deck purchases to one a month.
I actually decided to make it one or TWO a month - especially when I'm ordering something in the mail, it makes sense to combine shipping on those decks that I have to order anyway...(how is that for rationalization, LOL)

To do at least a weekly card draw, even if I can't quite manage a daily draw.
Have not been good about this - I'm only managing about once every few weeks right now. Once I'm done with my in-depth study of the Thoth, I will spend more time doing draws, I think.

Lady Eclipse  20 Apr 2004
Hi,

Interesting question. I'd have to say my goal is to finish at least three more tarot/divination decks before the end of the year and get their accompanying books completed to the point of only needing proofreading. The decks shouldn't be too much of a problem but the books could take awhile since I prefer detailed books to go with my decks rather than the LWB.

Joy to you,
Maralee

THREE! Well, if you can do it that is good going indeed.

We've both been working on Baroque Bohemian Cats more than full-time since last July now. In fact, although I said (above) that I hoped to also finish another deck this year we've decided it's impossible. Basically for us, one deck takes one year - at least. Ah well, I did know I was probably being a bit too ambitious!

Moonbow*  20 Apr 2004

Yep I'm still doing this and I try to either study my deck or read with it everyday. Hadar for me - haven't seen another I like as much yet - maybe the Camoin - but I'm so happy with this one that I feel I don't need another - yet!

Yep, I'm doing this too - although I'm going to stop after the Majors probably. I don't feel like doing the minors as individual cards - they need to bee seen together for proper understanding I think - I'm talking the Hadar again - of course.

Yep still doing this too - although it's not the Faerie's at the moment - it has changed regularly but is the Minchiate or Drogi at the moment.

Yep - you never know everything so I'm still doing this too!

I don't know about more because at the time I was involved in the Seekers threads but I am at least doing the same amount and I have progressed as I have come out of the closet and lots of people know I read Tarot now so - one day - I expect a request for a reading - other than AT

I'm still meditating - most days, as for dream work - it kind of goes hand in hand although I find I dream less when I'm hectic in my 'real' life.

I suppose I'm not doing too badly but I have changed my goals slightly in that I am studying Tarot more and working on my intuitive side alot as well.

Be interesting to see what's happening in 6 months time!

Hi baba! How are you? I suppose my goal would appear to be overly ambitious but I still think I can do it. :-) One of the decks is another divination type so it's going to be a really fun project. I know exactly how I want it to look, now, it's just a matter of making it happen. The C.C. deck was great to put together even though it's a much more serious type of divination deck than this one. Haven't decided upon the name yet.

How are things going with the BBCT? I hope everything is going well for you.

Had to put the deck collaboration aside since my friend no longer has the time to work on it and I'm not familiar enough with the series to go it alone. However, working on this deck gave me the idea to try something similar. It may end up being an Internet only (non-publishable) tarot depending on whether or not I can get permission from the copyright holders. Even if that is the case, I'll still have my own personal copy to play with. :-) I think people will get a real kick out of this one no matter what happens. I've already developed three spreads to use with it and have written a basic outline for the guidebook. I also consider this to be a really fun undertaking since I love the series. :-)

As for what the third deck to be completed will be, that's hard to say. I don't count finishing the other half of the Catch a Falling Star Tarot as part of the three I want to finish this year.

Joy to you,
Maralee

A friend of mine said to me yesterday: You like being pregnant but you don't like to give birth"!!

SO, this year, and it better be soon, I want to give birth to my deck, finally, and publish it!
(I'm working the stock details right now...)

Other than that, my greatest wish (and i'm counting on the publication of my deck for that), is to get at least 5 more new people, into the tarot...
Like, i asked my dad: when my deck will be out, will you start drawing a card a day?

i also want to start doing tarot workshops, not so much teaching tarot but more about cultivating the creative juices through the tarot... I'm working on the syllabus now...

and yes, do a bit more work on spreads...

Nice question, btw...It made me think, and I'm a bit amazed with my answers!!

Ah no, I was only referring to our ambitions, not yours :-) If you can do this work in one year then it will be quite a feat - and all best wishes to you.

Must say, the other ambition I have this year is also to get back to doing more reading. There is something odd about doing this second deck that has temporarily stopped me from reading as often as usual (one lot of images in my head pushing out others or something?) So getting back into regular reading is a definite goal. But I suspect it will just happen naturally after June.

Also - have to add one more - to FINALLY get to the end of Forest of Souls (good book, but I can only take it in small chunks)

Marion  20 Apr 2004
This is very inspirational stuff. I am slightly in awe of creative people, okay, cross out the 'slightly'.

My goals: keep reading, delve deeper.
Finish my 'Sacred Contracts' work as I think it relates back to what I can bring to tarot. (This is hard, I am somewhat stuck).

Don't buy too many decks.. notice I did not say, don't buy any decks.

Read, study, talk and read some more. Trust myself more.

SilverClaw  04 Jun 2004
hi just checking in to see how everyone is doing with their goals. So far I am only able to keep my goal of continuing the tarot courses I am sighend up for otherwise the other stuff is on hold till I move!!
