o.k. in readings I've done for myself I've come up with the 5 of wands a lot! I'm using the daughter's of the moon deck , and 5 of wands is "Pele" hawiian volcano goddess! The card is deep red and orange and it isn't very subtle! I've gotten it upright and reversed, and always as the final outcome or last card! Seems like this have happened more than just coincidence would have it! I suppose I would like a clue as to more insight into this card, perhaps from a different deck. Is it always negative? What are possible interpretations that I am maybe not seeing?

In the RW deck this card means squabbles, struggles, competition in your field of endeavor, dissention, etc. Reversed it means love of games and competition in a positive way. Hope that helps!

that's interesting purplelady, for my card of the day, the five of wands comes up for me more than any other card. as such, i feel a bit of an affinity for it. i think of "conflict" when the card appears. i like the daughters of the moon deck's usage of pele as an image for this card - that fits perfectly in my mind. in the robin wood deck, which is quite close to the r/w, it depicts five men fighting with wands. the wands are crossed, making the image of a pentacle, though it's a bit distorted. dust is being raised as each person jockeys for position.

actually, knowing this card comes up for you alot, brings me a little comfort. perhaps knowing that others also face this in thier lives brings me the feeling that i'm not alone. it's funny, i never really saw this as a negative card, but instead, as a natural part of life.

though i agree - this is not a subtle card...

luv and light,

Same feelings here. When I draw it as a 'daily card', I find [by the end of the day] that 'my world' was filled with struggles, annoyances, ya know things that duly piss one off but do not totally alter ones course. So, no Nexy you are not alone, we all get pissed off at times. I think it falls under that good ole control issue thing!

Silverstar  17 Aug 2001
I've drawn this card as part of my daily reading and a few times, the energy in the 5 of Wands manifested itself at work. For me personally, the 5 of Wands is definitely a red, flashing WARNING sign.

One time, I got ticked off about this new procedure that absolutely made no sense and then another time, I got ticked off at my boss. This wasn't energy that made me say "Gee, that's not nice." It was energy that got me worked up and I could feel the heat of my agitation throughout my body. It completely ruined my spirits for the day.

So when I get this card, I kind of stay prepared for whatever may throw me off course. I also look at this card as misdirected energy which would also apply to my reactions to the situations. Losing my temper was definitely misdirected energy! I should have avoided the 5 of Wands reaction with a Temperance approach.

See how it may manifest in your day or situation or maybe see how it can be a caution sign. Your own personal experience will give you an idea of how to interpret the card.

I pulled the 5 of Wands today as well, as the result card in a spread about what my school year will be like. In that context, I see it as an exciting and playful struggle with intellectual issues.

Struggle and conflict aren't always dangerous or annoying. Competition can be a lot of fun (i.e. sports), and heated differences in opinion can lead to greater understanding for everyone (i.e. classroom arguments).

it is in this context exactly that i see this card. i sincerely believe the only thing we have control over is ourselves. so when we encounter "five of wands" situations in life, we have a choice. we can choose to react poorly, by losing our temper and the like, or we can choose to react in a positive way, perhaps by keeping the situation in perspective; knowing that it's just part of the cycle; searching for the lesson involved, or looking for the positives in it. now if i could only apply that to all of my life...

Well . . .

This is kinda simple and superficial, but did'ja ever feel that things are in a mess? Like, my kitchen is a mess, my correspondense is a mess, my files are a mess, my whole life is in a mess.

I gotta get organized. Straighten everything out.

I'll start. First thing tomorrow.

I get this card more on Mondays than any other day.

i read with the voyager deck and the 5 of wands is oppression. sometimes i find that it's not my own oppression but someone else's. sometimes i feel that it is me wanting things to happen before their time. are you asking about the future in your readings? is there someone in your daily life that's holding you back in some way?
these are often the questions i ask myself when this card comes up.
hope this helps. light, New River

Lately , when I get ticked off , I Do have a physical reaction! My jaw clenches and my teeth grind. My temples throb.I feel lightheaded and actually fear I may pass out! I'm begining to wonder if it's some sort of panic attack! However , usually it is gone within an hour or so , and it doesn't ruin the entire day. I suppose it would be nice if I could somehow will myself to take a "temperance"approach , but I guess that's easier said than done. Misdirected energy. Well , I guess if I never had to deal with anyone else I could cut down on that alot! Perhaps it's a bad case of pms?! }> .

BTW ALL your responses have been helpful! New River , very insightful.

I suppose this is getting off subject here, but I realized for one that I was drinking too much coffee!! I've always been really sensitive to coffee, for instance I cannot have one cup after 2 pm or I will be up ALL night! (I know people who drink whole pots of the stuff and sleep just fine!) So I cut my coffee down to Only one cup in the morning and I feel just fine! Have not had a "physical" anger attack since. Also ,I'd quit eating ice cream around when this started also. Had been eating it in the summer . And I've heard it's proven that taking calcium prevents pms! Since I really don't like drinking milk, I think this drop in calcium definitely affected my mood also.

5-Wands can be seen as the general stuggle to survive or the conflicts & struggles that precede growth. Competition is inherent in the process of this energy. It can be healthy competition that encourages one's best efforts based upon a principle or a goal. Or the detrimental kind where one doesn't care whose toes get stepped on; an attitude of using whatever means necessary to get to the top or to "win" whatever. It refers to motivation, the drive to accomplish, the get-up-&-go.
There is a similar feeling in 5-Swords. The difference may be negligible depending on the situation, but here there is planning or organizing on a mental level; using one's wits & intellect to formulate a strategy to accomplish a goal that may or may not be ethical. A sort of battle strategy. An attitude of the ends justify the means, where in the 5-Wands it is more an instinctive reaction like that of survival of the fittest.
Nexyjo's description of 5-Wands "...as each person jockeys for position..." is appropriate.
Whenever I get this card, it usually refers to work-related stress; the day will be challenging, try my patience & fortitude, & the ability to deal with whatever may arise. As long as I retain a sense of balance, I am ok.
I get similar impressions when it is 10-Wands; only with the latter card, I can count on feeling overwhelmed as well, & I can almost "predict" when it will appear. In my line of work, there is always more to do than there is time allocated & thus a feeling of no end in sight!

Purplelady: The symptoms you describe (being "wired") sound like elevated blood pressure--which may be an over-simplification. It can occur in the apparently healthy depending on the level of stress perceived, the life-style, the diet, any under-lying health conditions, etc! Caffeine & sugar consumption, among other things can contribute & aggravate the blood pressure as well as lack of proper rest induced by such substances.
Including calcium & magnesium in proportionate amounts, also potassium in the diet can prevent conditions such as leg muscle cramps, post-delivery blues, doldrums, mood swings. Magnesium is one of the trace minerals the body requires & works with calcium.
I experienced leg muscle cramps & the blues after the birth of my first child. I realized why with the assistance of a member from a local healing prayer group I worked with. After that, I was prepared. I also studied the books of Adele Davis, a nutritionist & I cannot recommend them enough! I do not know if those books are still in print.
I must emphasize that vitamin & mineral supplements are to be viewed as "medicine" & to not try to "medicate" the self without professional guidance & research. Individual needs differ depending on various factors & must be calculated into any nutritional therapy.

purplelady, interesting observation about the calcium thing. i began taking it this summer because i broke my foot and my pms did get better. better not start a post on pms tho! giggle i wouldn't want to be that moderator!

love and light, New River
