This is a common fate for languages that have been written down for a long time, and change in the interim. English is no better, of course, arguably worse, in that multiple systems are in play in English. Gaelic is worse than Welsh. French also has major discrepancies, as does modern Greek.

Hi Shalott and ihcoyc; I've been away for a week and only just saw this now. I should have explained before, my name is in Irish which is one of two types of Gaelic (Scots Gaidhlig is the other), and Gaelic along with Breton, Welsh, Cornish and Manx, is part of the Celtic languages group. Irish now uses the same alphabet as English (with some differences - there's no j, k or z for example) but with a very different pronunciation system. There are some subtleties, but once you get a grasp of it it's reasonably regular.
Drrring! Lesson's over and school's out :)

Edited to add Sorry for veering WAY off-topic!

"Sallright - I love linguistics, although I don't know fluently any language but English, I like to learn as much as I can, as I think it really shows the evolution of societies...

Anyhoo, thanks for the lesson! Anymore is most welcome!
