Under a full moon, a 'croc' man walks along a path, carrying a bundle of ten wands tightly but awkwardly. They look as thought they could slip out at any moment, but going by the man's fierce expression, you wouldn't be inclined to help him pick them up.
He clings to them as if they are valuable - which they may be - but they are only deadwood. What does he need them for? For a fire? For a building project?
He's somewhat like the miser on the Four of Pentacles (in the RWS), although rather than not being able to share his possessions, this man is unable to share (and lighten) his load. Have the wands been forced onto him, or is his inability to ask for help causing him to suffer alone.
The LWB says he's a worker on his way home. So was his work to cut these wands for his house? Is he an overburdened father trying to provide for his family?
There's a sense of loneliness in this image - he carries these burdens alone and without complaint. Though everyone thinks he's managing OK, the load weighs down his heart. Perhaps we see someone suffering, and yet we're reluctant to offer help? He may look scary, but we shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.
