Combining Tarot and Runes

Hey there! I was wondering if any of you combine the tarot and the runes together. Can anyone suggest a way to use tarot and runes together at the same time to form an answer?

You could use one to answer the question posed, and the other for clarification/more information. I havent used runes in particular with tarot cards, but have used other oracles with the tarot in that way and its worked really well.

I don't especially like the idea. Tarot is about interrationships between the cards, while Runes pretty much stand alone without much interraction. I use Runes a lot, but not in combination with Tarot. The Haindl Tarot has the Rune "equivalent" indicated on each card, but I have serious doubts about the validity of the correspondences. However, if you are determined to combine Tarot and Runes, you might check on the Haindl. Myself, I wouldn't bother.

I think the basic way of combining any methods is that you pick one method and do a spread and pick some of the other method to look deeper into one card or several cards. So you might pick tarot, do a 3 card spread and also pick a rune with each card.

Like LRichard said they don't go together so well! tarot goes great with some oracles and different systems but I've always kept my runes and tarot very separate. I am sure people do combine them successfully though! hopefully they will post how it works for them

I do a daily draw each morning of a tarot card and recently I have started also drawing a rune also as I am learning to work with them. It is surprising how often the two strengthen/clarify/back each other up.

One idea I just thought of (take from it what you will!) is shuffle your tarot cards whilst thinking of your questions/problem/whatever then when you are ready lay out your cards in piles of 3 (or however many cards you want to read on a subject) then cast your runes over the grid of cards, wherever the rune that represents your question (decide before starting I guess!) lands read that pile of cards. If another rune also lands on the pile with the rune representing your question read that also and take into consideration in your reading.

I'm sure there is a a huge variety of ways to make use of the 2 systems if one thinks outside of the box.

I have actual used them together Here on AT the thread is >>Here<<

I find the Runes give a deeper meaning about a questions...The Root of the issue. And Tarot focus on "day to day" details ... combined I believe they give you a much deeper, rich, complex grasp of the situation. And Like one member said, they compliment each other very well.

Have fun experimenting !

I'll just toss this in and then shut up forevermore in this thread.

You are combining an ancient North European alphabet with medieval Central and South European playing cards. They represent entirely different cultural phenomena, which were isolated from one another by time, space, climate, religion, you name it. They are incompatible unless you twist their meanings to force them to work together, but then you lose the distinctives which make each system so valuable. Of course, if you eliminate all consideration of the historical origins of the systems, then they become mere divination tools, similar to but somewhat more complex than the Magic 8 Ball.

Otherwise, if your interest in Runes is confined to Ralph Blum's pseudo Rune set, with the blank non-Rune , and Tarots such as Gothic Bohemian Cats, then you certainly should feel free to indulge your fantasies.

And both systems are disconnected in time, climate, and culture from the present day. So to use them requires one to adapt their meanings to modern life. We are talking about using them as divination tools...I don't see how their origin matter.

Im confused as to how you use them, that require such segregation .
