Why is the background in the Knight of Pentacles yellow & the other 3 Knights are shades of blue?

I went through the Court cards and all the Pentacles have a yellow background and the rest are white to light blue.

Anyone know why?

Excellent questoin, ros.

I still tend to read colors based on aspect (emotional, material, spiritual levels...also, position of card and direction character is facing.

I would see the Knight of Pentacles as "active," intellectual, solid in the material plane...maybe the bright yellow as the manifestation of more "airy" colors. Blue, especially light blue for me are often more spiritual, emotional and perhaps relating to communication.

I don' t recall though reading any interpretations as they apply to this pattern in the RWS deck.

My first thought, considering Virgo, it's to do with Mercury,
as seen on first, The Magician, a favourite pick for Mercury,
or if you like, Strength (my candidate for this attribution).

Mercury was termed as Exalted in Virgo by
the wise of yore. A very sacred designation.

Jupiter, which rules Pisces and Sagittarius,
is exalted in watery Cancer, and for Gemini,
the exaltation being the Lunar North Node,
it may be also linked to the aquatic Moon.

Astrologers often overlook the significance
ot the very unique combination of Mutable
rulership seen in Mercury and Jupiter there.

Except for the Leo Sun and Cancer Moon reigns,
Cardinal and Fixed signs mix and match planets,
but Mutables are paired with Mercury and Jupiter.

It's an amazing thing to think about...

Tarot Knights:
Wands and Cups ~ Jupiter
Swords and Pentacles ~ Mercury
