The clothing readers wear

SunChariot

Hi again,

I would be very interested in hearing your views and beliefs on the way Tarot readers dress. Are you for or against dressing differently to do readings, what you wear differently and more importantly, for those why dress the part and decorate their rooms they read in differently why and what you think it adds to a reading. Or if you don't believe in that, why not?

I'd be very interesting in hearing different points of view on this.

Hi Babs, Great thread topic!

I was just going to start a thread asking if anyone knew of a cool silk screened top, or cloths with Tarot on it? All I can think of is a t-shirt.

Are there are better options? Are there Tarot fabric sources? But I don't really want to start sewing. I use my mother-in-law's sewing machine when I have projects.

I want to wear something to the health club featuring Tarot to encourage people to ask if I do readings. I am getting a new membership. I would love to find out if others wear cloths to encourage people to ask about the Tarot when they are out in public?

I would say that during a reading, the best thing would be to wear business or business casual attire--a reader is a professional, and ought to look the part. Then again, depending on where you live, workplace attire might be more casual, so it really depends.

As for Tarot-related clothing... something like this is the closest I can think of, but that's Kabbalah more than specifically Tarot.

Update: some Googling uncovered this T-shirt, which looks like exactly what Pam O might like, as well as this one. They'll only catch the eye of someone who already knows a little about Tarot, but if you're looking for Tarot clothes, it seems that they do, in fact, exist.

Just a head's up, with the $6 t shirts, you get what you pay for. The printing is not very good, and the cotton is scratchy in the solid colours. However, tarot t shirts!

In reply to the OP, I like to wear shawls of some description, but that's mostly because I'm also a knitter.

I wouldn't care much about the clothing readers wear or the space.

I'd be wary if that person and their reading space seemed too fake, like they were putting on this big display of being like the idea most people have of Tarot readers and it didn't seem natural to them. The only exception to that would be a costume event or something where being theatrical would be expected.

To me, if I were a doing private readings (that is, serious one-on-one readings with people) I would want to dress professionally, like any other profession where you want to be taken seriously.

When I started with Psychic Fairs, many years ago, They also said dress professionally, an idea I had already decided on. When friends ask about it, they assumed I wore a costume: big earrings and floppy shirts. "No," I said, "I dress like this (I was just returning from a fair and still in a skirt and blouse.)" "Like how?" my friend didn't get it. "Like a librarian," said another person, who I know from my (then) library job. Then all them got it. So, If you want to be professional, dress like a librarian.

Nowadays, I DO costume up in very expensive, hand made and beaded outfits (one very early one is here (http://www.julianeedlman.com/Costumes.htm) on the lower left side of the page. I have MUCH better stuff now.) This works for doing very high end parties and trade shows. As someone told me long ago, if you are going to ask for big bucks, dress like you are worth it.

As far as clothing tarot readers wear:

When I go to Tarot conferences like Readers Studio in NY, or BATS (Bay Area Tarot Symposium in Northern CA) I noticed quite a few people wearing lots of layers of flowing materials, often vintage looking materials.

When people watching in the hotel, it was easy to see certain people that were there with the Tarot conference. Others looked just like any one else. You would have never been able to pick them out as Tarot readers...

I Googled for photos of Tarot readers at various conferences. For anyone who has not been to a Tarot conference, it is an awesome experience to meet the everyday Tarot enthusiasts, including lots of Aeclectic members, as well as so many of the Tarot greats alive today. :)

One of my favorite clothing retailers for when I'm feeling gothic has got some 'trendy' Occult/Tarot-related tops (unisex, too):

Of course, I would probably never wear anything like this if I were to give a reading to someone in person (especially since I live in a conservative area!). But hey, who says I can't relive my mall-goth days on my time off? :D
