Liechtenstein - fifth suit deck from 1450s

Huck

hi Mary,

there is a dispute about the true age of the deck. One position arguments, that the deck might be of much later time, about early 16th century, which would give it quite another position in playing card history.

The suits are "Latin suits", the shields appear inside the suits common in Switzerland.
The "only" argument for a descendancy from the Mameluks decks would be the bent batons.
This might count something, if the deck is really "very early" ... but, if the deck is of a later date as suggested above, this doubtfully says too much.

The name "Liechtenstein" is NOT from the location "Liechtenstein", I've read, that it's a name of an earlier owner of the cards.
The link to Michael's post ... I think, Michael has a different topic.
