For Kindle owners: download book samples. (Tarot books of course rely on illustrations and may thus not be the ideal candidates for e-book readers - but you get a first impression of the way the book is structured and the writers "voice".)

I have a whole section on my Kindle devoted to tarot books, many of them samples, which help me to decide which book is next. Buying books second hand or checking out your local library is also an option if you want to check out a book but are not sure whether to invest money in a new copy. Tarot books can be pricey if they're illustrated like art books.

My first tarot book was Spiritual Tarot / 78 Paths to Personal Development, and it was quite good. The writers gave a voice to each card, and I liked their approach. It gave me a good and not too difficult foundation for later studies. My copy is full of personal notes ;-)

Pollack came later and gave me many new insights about the cards, Mary Greer was next and got me personally involved.
