egyptian hieroglyphics

hannahma

Hi, I'm a new Tarot user who started off with an Egyptian Tarot deck because of my long time interest in Egypt. I have made a stab at learning hieroglyphics (laboriously photocopied Gardiner's 500-page "Egyptian Grammar" and so forth). The cards have various "inscriptions" on them, but from what I can puzzle out, the hieroglyphics don't seem to refer to either the content of the cards or the dieties supposedly represented. In fact, they don't seem to make any sense at all, although my Egyptian isn't good enough to be sure. Does anyone know if these inscriptions are from some actual source? the Book of the Dead, maybe? I find it odd that a card that supposedly refers to Ptah or Anubis doesn't name these deities but appears to name some other. On another card depicting the Sun Disc, the name of Aten-Ra does appear twice. Very odd.

If you can give me a few scans, or perhaps link to a site that has the glyphs clear enough to make out, I can see what I can do to help; ancient Egyptian is a hobby of mine.

Does anyone happen to know what the glyphs on the Ibis card backs mean?

On Tarotgarden' site, if you call up the second page of Eyptian tarots (!) it's the Italian Wegener and Alasia deck; clicking on "more samples" brings up six cards. I don't know what the inscriptions say, but the book claims the Ace of Wands, there, portrays Horus, and if that's his name I'll eat my obelisk.
On the two of Pentacles, is that Anubis' name in there somewhere?

Scans/Review...but don't know about the Egyptian symbology

1.This will help identify what the cards look like--all cards available here.

2. I also read in this review that there was suppose to be corrections in the symbols--but I don't know enough of the symbolic names to really decipher accuracy:

3. I saw a special last night that showed how a gentleman first discovered the name of Ramses (Rah=sun + mem + ses) and Thoth-mem-ses (Ibis bird + mem + ses)--he was the French translator who knew ancient languages just about the time the Rosetta stone was shipped to England as spoils of war. I fell asleep early, unfortunately, so didn't see the rest of the special...but I hoped at some point to follow such things up in any of my "Egyptian" tarots.

4. I was at some point checking out sites like the one in Sacred Texts and pulling my Laura Tuan di Vecchi Tarot on the beautiful parchment and Sylvia Alasia decks (black with papyrus design--not the Nerferteri or Sphynx ones from Lo Scarabeo)...to see how 'authentic' Egyptian they were...

5. I look forward to hearing if you find any of the "Egyptian" tarots below as authentic. I have the Laura Tuan and Lo Scarabeo (Sylvia Alasia) decks, but haven't puzzled it out how "Egyptian" these are yet...

Sorry for the jumble, just woke up from another rather tired nap...been under the weather...excuse my excited rambling of too many bits...but people's posts to this thread is kind of happy-exciting-hopefulness to me...

This might be a more authentic Egyptian style deck

1...the book has a listing of 22 of its cards that are similar to the trumps ordering in tarot...this is supposed to be more authentic to Egyptian symbology...

2. Recent thread on the subject has this link to Egyptian symbols.

Best wishes, hope this relates to the general topic posted.

Silvia Alasia is an artist rather than a tarotist(?) or Egyptologist so it would surprise me if the glyphs were particularly relevant. It would be a lot of "extra" work to do the research required.

I once read with someone who had a deep connection with the Ibis Tarot and also knew some Ancient Egyptian and she used the glyphs as a kind of random prod to intuition rather than as a sensible intellectual layer of meaning. It worked quite well for her.
