Qabalah - Tree of Life - Gedulah/Hesed

Whereas 1 Chronicles 29:11 tends to favour 'Gedulah' (Greatness), most Kabbalistic references tend to name this Sephirah as '(c)Hesed' (Love or LovingKindness or 'Covenant').

Located on the right-hand pillar below cHockmah (Wisdom), it is opposite Geburah/Pahad (which we'll get to later) and is the first emanation of the creative act below the three Supernals. From Binah (Understanding) emerges the forms, first expanding their shape in Love (Hesed) before being molded further later.

In both the Zohar and the Golden Dawn, this Sephirah is said to have qualities which pertain of Jupiter.

Its interesting to see how the relationship and types of energy manifested in Geburah and Gedulah/Chesed are so well encapsulated in modern astrology and discussions about the interactions between Mars (Geburah) and Jupiter (Chesed).

The following quote is from pg 52 ‘ A garden of pomegranates’ Israel Regardie {published by Llewellyn 10th Ed )

“Chessed. Number Four called Chessed—Mercy, begins the second Triad of Sephiros which is the reflection of the Supernal Triad beyond the abyss. The three primary or elementary colours are attributed to the Sephiros of this second trinity; blue to Chessed, Red to Geburah, and yellow to Tipharas.

The forth to the ninth Sephiros inclusive are known as the ‘ sephiros habinyon’—the potencies of Construction, and Myers holds that they symbolize the dimensions of matter, be it an atom or an universe: the four directions of space (according to the Sepher Yetsirah) and the positive and negative poles of each of these.

….The Zohar gives it another title Gedulah, Majesty or Greatness, both of which are qualities of the great astrological benefic Jupiter.”
