What "qualifies" as a RWS?

INIVEA

The deck in general would be discussed in Tarot Decks (Llewellyn's Classic Tarot or a new thread). If you wish to discuss individual card interpretations, it would be UTC until such time that a study group is created and then it would be Tarot Study Groups.

great, thanks :D

How about the Anraths deck? (the RWS deck with extra female pages and knights?) I'd love to see Waite's reaction to that; wonder if he would add in some pages to the PKT or burn the cards in disgust....

Anrath Tarot

This Tarot offers a novelty that distinguishes it from other decks: instead of the usual 78 cards, it consists of 86 cards, but nevertheless remains a real Tarot. The eight additional cards are the female counterparts to the knights and knaves (pages), which has 24 this Tarot Court Cards. While there are other Tarots, where a sexual balance has been prepared by the boys and the like as princesses are referred to, but here it is a complete balance while maintaining the original gender distribution within the court cards. The 24 Court Cards here consist of 4 Kings, 4 Queens, 4 Knights, 4 women, 4 pages and 4 Maiden. The additional cards were so well adapted to the Rider-Waite-style that they could come by Pamela Coleman Smith himself. The images that I show in this Tarot, these eight additional maps.

That's a good question. I'm not aware of that deck. Only image I was able to find shows the box or book cover. I've included it as an attachment. So it looks like 78 cards are Pam's original work and 8 cards have been added in the same style to make an 86 card deck? Zephyros and I will need to discuss that and get back to you.

Yep that's pretty much what it is, with some keywords on the edges. I have love for odd RWS decks and I just found this one in my packed stuff. The question was a bit tongue in cheek; however. The last 'purist' I showed this deck to was pretty irritated by the additional females :bugeyed:

Richard

There already is gender balance in the RWS court cards. Knights are male of 40 years or older. Queens are female in the same age bracket. Kings are male under 40, and Pages are female under 40. (PKT Part III § 7) Thus there are 8 men and 8 women represented in the courts. In actual use, any court card can be either male or female of any age. (Personally, I think of Pages as tomboys.)

Not wanting to deviate too radically from the historical decks, Waite had the Pages depicted as male (or androgynous), like the Valets in the TdM.

Bookdepository has this which may be it

The pictures haven't shown it, but the back of my anraths deck is also the rosy cross, but all in blue.

Which reminds me, INIVEA, I found my rosy cross backed regular RWS deck, but I don't have the ISBN on the box to match up to the online sites so I can't tell if they are the same :(

He may not have known it, but the Cary Yale deck has the male and female Knights and Pages.
