Daveluy?

Lee

I just happened upon mention of this deck on the Internet. Does anyone know, is this a deck actually for sale somewhere? You can see some cards on this page from Donnaleigh's blog:

http://www.divinewhispers.net/apps/...-33-lenormand-physical-descriptions-of-people

It says it was reprinted by Caitlin Matthews, but when I Google it I'm not finding any reference to anyone offering it for sale. I searched AT, and only found one person who mentions having it, but no other info.

It was printed in a very small print run, and all the copies were sold direct from Caitlin. I don't think she has any left, but you could ask her - she's easy to find if you google her I expect.

ETA - the print run was 50, decks were individually numbered.

Thanks for the responses! Not feeling that rich, Gregory... ;)

The eBay deck is incomplete -- it's missing all the sixes. If you like to read the Lenormand without those 4 cards, go ahead and splurge!
According to the listing, the ORIGINAL never had them. And as they were used for Bezique - that makes sense.

ETA Mary Greer's blog has information about a 32 card deck with no sixes. and a MUCH earlier deck which is like the kind she probably used:

Lenormand herself used the cards that were already available, after all, not decks she created. Probably a 32 card Piquet/Euchre deck.

The most famous card reader of all time was Mademoiselle Lenormand, who devised a system of identifying playing cards with certain of life's situations, and who read cards for Napoleon Bonoparte and his wife the Empress Josephine. After Lenormand's death, card makers created specially illustrated "Lenormand style" decks so that anyone could use her divination system without having to memorize the meanings of the playing cards. In these decks, there is a small image of the regular playing card face set into a larger colour picture of the mnemonic image, with the set-number in a circle at the top.

In keeping with European playing card trends of her period, Lenormand probably told fortunes with a 32-card Euchre deck arrayed in 4 suits (Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, Spades) with 20 pip cards (A, 7, 8, 9, T), and 12 court cards (K, Q, J).

I think this deck is complete for what it is, just not what is now called a Lenormand (and she said herself that she disclaimed all responsibility for so called Lenormand decks.)

All true, however in the deck that is for sale on eBay the numbering goes up to 36 and is missing: 2 Clover, 16 Star, 19 Tower and 36 Cross. The original Daveluy that Caitlin Matthews re-issued contains *all* 36 cards.

Daveluy from Bruges (Belgium) had made this deck from 1840 to 1895. His heir Geuens-Seaux made the same between 1895 and 1901, albeit less colorful and with slightly different details. For instance, you can compare the sun from the Daveluy sold on ebay with the sun from my original Geuens-Seaux :

Some info at the Lenormand Museum : http://www.lenormand-museum.com/petit-jeu-de-la-madame-lenormand.html

It's by far my prefered Lenormand. Balance between text, image and insert card is perfect.

There is a new Daveluy deck in the works.

I am currently working on Caitlín Matthews' Daveluy deck. It should be ready for her visit to the US for the Readers Studio event in NYC and then the following week in Seattle WA. She should have them with her and available at the two US events in late April, early May.

She has prepared an English translation of the text that will be available digitally in pdf directly from her, while the decks will be available from my website. I will furnish all the particulars in the on my website in the description of the cards.

On April 25 I will make them available on my website for those who won't be going to the US events.

I am cleaning up her cards somewhat and they will have no artificial crud added. And the backs will be different from the edition she produced in 2013. I am really looking forward to having my own copy of these beautiful old cards. They are, I believe, older than the ones that Dondorf produced. Keep an eye out on my Game of Hope website for them.

The first ones are already back from the printer. :D And now Caitlin's Daveluy cards are up on my website for pre-order. The decks that are ordered early will probably have enough time to get here by the release date: 25 April, the opening date of the Readers Studio where Caitlin will have some on hand for sale.
