Mari, actually I had a similar experience growing up, as a child I often looked at a sun sign book that was lying around the house, by Zolar. Although, I admit I pretty much only read the chapter about my own sign! I do think that there's probably a lot of good material in those books, just because they're "popular" and a few decades old doesn't mean there's nothing in there of interest to us today.

By the way, I haven't read MFK Fisher but I do have several books by Elizabeth David which I enjoy. One can really learn a lot about life in post-war England by reading them...
