Paul Marteau's "Le Tarot de Marseille"

Mikey

Hey everyone, from my understanding there are two editions of this text. One that was published in 1930, and another published in the 80's, both in French.

I see the 1930 version references quite often here (from reading older threads), but I see no mention of the 2nd edition.

My question is, how different are the two versions? I assume the content would be the same in both, perhaps the only difference being maybe cover images and/or the addition of an introduction or preface perhaps?

Thanks!

Coredil's research is impressive and commendable. I have a 1981 reprint of Marteau's book, a paperback. It has the now-standard Grimaud deck illustrations printed on the paper.

From some of the other editions I have seen, the content is identical, other than the discrepancies in the images used, as Coredil has noted.

The introduction by Marteau ends with the subscript: "Paris, 1928-1948". The late J.-C. Flornoy gives a date of 1929 for a supposed deluxe edition which I have never heard of. The catalogue of the French national library mentions the existence of a 1919 edition, but I have not seen it or ever heard of it either.

Copies of the various editions show up fairly frequently on second-hand book websites, ebay and French second-hand goods websites.

On the other hand, the content of Marteau's booklet for his deck is rather different from what is contained within his book. I have a couple of copies, one from the 1940s which predates the book, and another later edition from the 50s. Apart from a footnote in the later edition giving the bibliographical references to the by now-published book, the content of the booklets is identical. See this post for some more info on that booklet: http://www.tarotforum.net/showthread.php?p=3809169#post3809169

Incidentally, the full name of the booklet is: "Ancien Tarot de Marseille, explication des Arcanes Majeurs et Mineurs, avec de nombreux exemples de positions respectives de lames, précédée de nouvelles méthodes de Divination par le Tarot Traditionnel." It contains precisely 80 pages.
