Goddess Tarot: 12 ~ Sacrifice: Kuan Yin

Kuan Yin is the great mother of compassion. Rather than choosing eternal bliss of nirvana, she elected instead to become a bodhisattva, who stays with us on earth, to ease our suffering and offer compassion.

She is depicted cradling an infant in her arms and gazing down upon the earth. The moon and the sun are at either corner of the picture, showing her balanced nature. The frame surrounding her is blooming with lotuses, because her name means "Born of the Lotus". The lotus is significant, both for it's feminine qualities, and that it is a gorgeous flower which blooms from the muck. This is symbolic of Kuan Yin's ability to rise above her earthly existence, to see life from a greater perspective.
