Mythological character help

I am looking for some help in identifying a character from myth or fairytale or folktale and I am not having any luck tracking down the character so I can research him (or her). Perhaps one of you myth-wise members or Jungians can help me identify this character.

It is the person who's lot is to dig in muck (probably forever) to find gold.

I vaguely remember some stores about a character like that but I can't remember.
