XV - Devil

poivre

The lady in The Devil card has a tail of grapes and the
man a tail of fire.

Does anyone know what these symbols mean in
this card?

my guess the grapes are overindulge in vino and the tail of fire-desire, uh- hem, the fire isn't coming from the correct anotomical place? Which just made me wonder about homosexuality, but I don't want to start a fire over that. To each their own is just fine with me. What do you call a guy who's hung up on sex, he's not a nymph is he?

Waite says that the tails "signify the animal nature..." If the fire indicates desire and the tail on the woman has a pomegranate which symbolizes plenty (or fertility), this would make sense.

A and E

A. E. Waite wrote (PKT Page 128) concerning the
"two figures, male and female" that, and I quote:

These are analogous with those of the fifth card,
as if Adam and Eve after the Fall.

Checking, I did see that A. E. Waite's fifth card,
V THE HIEROPHANT, does indeed show two figures,
but they look like novice monks, worshipfully pious.

I find it’s one more similarity to the Lovers card. In that card, behind the woman is a tree bearing fruit, behind the man is a tree in flames.

A.E. Waite

I think Waite meant to say that he was referring to the two figures on the VI card, symbolizing "love before it is contaminated by gross material desire."

XV and

VI The Lovers

I've often wondered, did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?

Yes. :)

Take a look at the twins in the Marseille Sun card as well. Some versions show a tail :)

If Adam was formed out of clay, and Eve was taken from his rib,
there doesn't seem to have been any need for belly buttons...

Re ~ le Tarot de Marseille XVIIII Le Soleil:
Those two kids are wrapped around the middle
with some pretty weird diapers ~ more like part
of the wall seen behind them being bonded up.
And about the "tail" well, I never did think Darwin
invented evolution! :) (It's "Aleph meets Taw")

I'd say that's a pretty big "if".

LOL.

Actually, Adam and Eve did have belly buttons, but they were probably covered by all that fur.
