Le Tarot Divinatoire (1909) Gérard Encausse

Le Tarot Divinataire (1909) by Gérard Encausse.
Please, I would like to ask...
Is this from The Tarot of the Bohemians or was
it an independent study? Is it in English maybe?
Many Thanks!

It is a work that he wrote about ten years later, as indicated by your dating.

As I have not read the work, I am unsure how closely it reflects the final section of his earlier work.

moderating note: I have fixed the spelling of the title of his book in the title of this thread

Hi :) jmd! Divinataire and Divinatoire both appear
equally when searching this title, seen in full as:

Le Tarot Divinatoire: Clef Du Tirage Des Cartes Et Des Sorts

*

Yes it came out after Bohemians, but we see
many books that spin-off earlier editions and
newly package the materials and approaches.

Tarot Des Imagiers Du Moyen Age (1927)
and then L'Etude du Tarot (1931) are both
by Oswald Wirth on much the same topic
but with a charming difference and zest. ;)

Hello Fulgour,

BTW it is in Papus book "Le Tarot Divinatoire" that you can find the 78 b & w drawings of Gabriel Goulinat.
If I recall well you do have the US Games version of the Papus Tarot Deck.
As you know, the pictures of this deck are based on Goulinat drawings.

Here are scans of Le fou:
1. As founded in Papus book (the picture is 17,5 x 11,5 cm)
2. From the Dusserre Edition of the deck
3. From the US Games edition

Those cards where also printed as "Tarot divinatoire par le Dr. Papus" in 1909 and reprinted in 1992 as "Le Tarot divinatoire par le Dr. Papus".

here are a few scans from that one

I was lurking on Amazon today and ran across this English version. The ISBN and publisher are the same as the one Cerulean linked to but with different cover art. It looks like the release date has been moved to Dec. '08. There are also a couple of French versions at Amazon. I didn't feel like waiting another 11 months so I ordered one of those. I can't read French really, but at least it will have the illustrations. Too bad someone hasn't reprinted the Solleone version. They must be very rare, or if not, no one has any intention of letting theirs go as you never see them for sale.

You can find James Revak's translations from this book of the card meanings by Etteilla and his disciple d'Odoucet (p. 112 - 152) at:
http://www.villarevak.org/td/td_1.htm
He does a great job of comparing them with Waite & Mathers so that we can see Etteilla's influence.

Le Tarot Divinatoire contains much more, so I'll be glad of the translation as it is a real struggle for me to read.

Cerulean

Ah...if you are waiting, I would not pre-order...

...they've had my pre-order since 2007 and they know my order is still 'there,' but the delay in translation is such that...well, I ordered it from them when it was New Aeon Books and it was supposedly in print...or 'coming soon.'

Soon might be December 2008.

Cheers,

Cerulean

Cerulean

It arrived in April 2008 and it is charming...

and incredibly helpful for those who like the old-fashioned deck.

The Etteilla-style meanings are clearly attributed to Etteilla by the translater. The designs remind one of the following tarots:

Lismon

Papus

Grand Etteilla

Italian Cartomanzia

Esoteric Ancient Tarots (Jeu de Princesse)...

I'm a-glow with delight...
