The Transparent Tarot

Hmmm about that math  LOL Never my strong suit in school, and I look at sets of numbers and feel the frustration and tears coming on. So I will take your word for it and just know that there are a hellavuh lot of different combinations!
That's ok, that's why they invented geeks and nerds...

The general form of the equation is:

possible combinations = (a^n*(x!/(x-n)!))/n!
where
x is the number of cards in the deck, (78 for tarot)
n is the number of cards in the draw, and
a is the number of permutations per card (so for just reversals a=2, but if you put cards sideways, a=4).
! is a factorial: e.g. 5! = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120
This assumes you don't care which order the cards are stacked.

For three cards this gives 608,608 combinations (simple reversals).
For four cards: 22,822,800
For five cards: 675,554,880
For six: 16,438,502,080
Over 16.4 billion!!!

Incidentally, this can be used to calculate the number of possible spreads. (where order is important, the final division by n! is skipped)
For example, for an 11 card Celtic cross with reversals, there are 6.359 x 10^23 possible combinations. This is *more* than the total number of molecules in 18 mL of water!!!!

Btw, Sidhe-Ra, I think your idea and execution is brilliant and fabulous! I must have one! Hopefully I will be able to scrounge up the $$ in time! Please reserve one for me! (no hurry though)

Hey, I resemble that remark....

Seriously, sidhe-ra, great idea, and fantastic execution....

Sidhe-Ra

Thank you everyone! I am bowled over! (Particularly by the maths- crikey!)

A meager offering of just one card today- the moon. She looked pretty with the High Priestess, so I've posted that, and with all the rest of the cards so far.

Many Blessings,

Em x

Astraea Aurora

Hi Sidhe-Ra,

I really like your new deck project. Those cards look really cool.

I have one suggestion that might be of use if you don't want to draw each and every card on its own. You could use transparency foils (those for overhead projectors) if your printer has this option, some of them are printable.

Might turn out this suggestion isn't worth a penny but I wanted to mention it.

Many insightful ideas, Astraea Aurora

Sidhe-Ra

Thanks Astraea Aurora!

I am actually drawing them with markers on plain paper and printing them onto acetate using my computer and printer at home :)

Blessings,

Em x

Oh, know that you say it I remember it. Sorry, Sidhe-Ra.

Blessings, Astraea Aurora

Sidhe-Ra

Nothing to be sorry for! Imagine if I didn't know there was printable acetate, how helpful your comment was! (I wasn't sure when I had the idea, I had to google to find out)

Don't stop being helpful :)

Many Blessings,

Em xx

Dipping into the minors...

Hi everyone!

Today I thought I'd try out my concept for the minors, to give me a better idea as to how the deck would work as a whole. I've started with the 'twos'. Below are images of them seperately, and then together.
As always, very interested to hear honest opinions :)

Many blessings,

Em x

With the majors

Here is an example of how the minors and majors will combine...

Lovely. I really like the way the Two of Wands and Two of Cups overlap like that.

I think it's a good choice, the way you have the minors (if the 2s are any indication) as small figures, set within the larger context of the majors.

But I don't think this would be a deck that a 1-card reading will do justice to! :p
