The Victorian Romantic Visual Journaling Study Group - discussion thread

Little Baron

In waiting for this deck to arrive, I am starting this thread.

Karen was saying that it would be nice for some to record their readings, drawings and whatever else, visually in their accompanying journals. Of course, if you didn't get the Gold edition, you can still do this in any journal. She is going to upload more bits and bobs to her site, which can be used.

I have started doing this before. Drawing into my readings, with the Rohrig. It was a very refreshing and personal experience.

So before we start posting our efforts, maybe we can chat about how we might go about doing it.

Will the imagery be only from the VR Tarot, or will you use other media - drawing, for example?
I thought it might be nice to slot in photographs I take on my phone, occasional magazine clippings etc etc and work my own doodles and thoughts amongst them.

So, here is a thread to share experiences within, regarding your VR journaling.

To get us started, here is some links to journaling and inspiration.

Firstly, I read about the late Dan Eldon many years ago. His work can be found through googling. He was a remarkable young man.

That first link you gave is great. I can see myself looking through that for hours.

Ohhhh, this is an exciting idea. I've drooled over issues of "Cloth, Paper, Scissors". This inspires me to get my craft room up and running--I've just moved to a larger house and finally have a room for my art, don't have to take over the kitchen table any more.

I shall shoot in with a couple of book recommendations from my personal library:

- Altered Books Workshop by Bev Brazelton
- Altered Books, Collaborative Journals and Other Adventures in Bookmaking by Holly Harrison
- More Making Books by Hand by Peter and Donna Thomas
- Bookworks by Sue Doggett
- Handcrafted Journals. Albums, Scrapbooks & More

Some of these deal with making journals from scratch and the art of bookbinding, but they also contain information on inserts--this is a nice way of adding art to a journal--creating "tip in" pages. I made some of these for exchange when I was on the Altered Books group at Yahoo. That way you can do collage or painting on watercolour paper or similar and then tip in the page to the main journal.

Also ideas for extra embellishment of the journal cover to customize. Karen's pictures of the journal show that it has a beautiful cover, but you can add charms and brass corners as extras.

And embellishment of pages, even if you are just going to write on the pages, you can highlight them with glazing or stamping etc. or a snall hand painted custom border.

You can even glue a stack of pages together and cut out a little box to make a shrine or shadowbox to Victoriana with 3D objects within the journal.

Hmmm, maybe I should get the journal after all? <g> No, I just got the regular edition, which is what I wanted. I might make my own accordion book with wrapped hardcover ends.

I have scads of Victorian clip art in several Dover collections--both colour and black and white. If you want higher resolution images, the Dover Electronic clip art series are pretty inexpensive to buy. I also have 30,000 Dover images in my Masterclips collection--they were licensed to them before Dover got the bright idea of publishing their own CD collections.

I've got dozens of them actually, being a devoted fan of illustration for many years.

Oh dear, and I was trying to stop doing more projects. Isn't that always the way with art, it sneaks up on you and says "Surprise! Your brain will not rest until you create this thing. Forget about sleeping and eating."

Okay, I have taken the "high res" images to something a bit more realistic (still pretty big though) and added a lot more:

I know it's only a start, but I can imagine some of these being used in a very creative way (and for those who aren't planning to use them it may be interesting to see some of the original images in detail).

Oh I am a complete newbie at this sort of thing but I would love to tag along! Great idea, I am so excited!
