The House of the Future
Hopes, Wishes, The Dream of a Better Tomorrow, Progress, and all things related to the Future all fall into the Realm of Aquarius and the 11th House.
Why is it called the House of Friends then? Well, it helps to think of the 11th house as the house of "like-minded individuals". And in many cases they are very unique. People with a strong 11th house influence feel like outsiders until they find there special group of people. Those who think like us, our "scene" -- the "cool club". Our Peers and Associates. And it's these peers and associates, and other people we spend our time with who help us create our future. You've heard of people "hanging out with the wrong crowd" or the oft accompanying "s/he'll come to no good end", right? Well it's that same idea of the future being determined by our actions now.
You can see how one's 'crowd' or 'scene' segues into one's political opinions, and and how politics is intimitely involved with creating the future -- Aquarius' activism toward a Utopian Society is well known -- but did you think about how it relates to Uranus' rulebreaking or Aquarius' stubborn individuality?
I see it as being tied into the idea of "following your dream" -- close to "wishing upon a star" but with more action -- As Uranus' helps us to dare to go against the status quo and Saturn, also ruler of Aquarius, helps us to hold true to our principles and follow the long steady path (to the future).
If we are not true to ourselves now, we have no future, or at least a future that is not ours.
Speaking of the future, Uranus, Aquarius, and the 11th house have a strong tie to technology and advancement as well. If there is a house of Science Fiction, this would be it. I like to think of the Archetype of Aquarius as that of the Alien Grey. People with strong Aquarian tendencies often literally feel like they're from a different world -- they feel "more advanced" or "more evolved" and can't understand why the silly humans still do things in the backwards way that they do. They don't like the messy details that are involved with being human, physically and emotionally. Think of the white walls of the stereotypical alien lab, or the clean room at the JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratories) satellite-assembling facility (or a computer chip processing plant) and you get the idea. Emotion-wise, think of a Vulkan on Star Trek, or an Asgard (alien grey again) on Stargate and you get a feel for how aloof and cold other's can think of Aquarian energy. (January-February *is* the coldest time of year for most of the world) The Aquarians see nothing wrong with their intellectually advanced state, and wish the humans would hurry up and realize this is the better, more sophisticated, fairer, ideal way of doing things.
Of course the other humans just think these 'aliens' among us are utterly bizzare, eccentric and weird. In the worst cases they are cast out for speaking of their unique vision. In the best they are hailed as Genuises.
The pagan Holiday of Imbolc falls in the middle of the sign of Aquarius, and while more commonly known as "Groundhog Day", it is the idea of a brighter (literally) future coming in the future. For it is during Aquarius' reign that the Days begin to get noticably longer, and we finally have the Hope for an end to the cold long nights of winter.
I hope this helps to illustrate how Aquarius, the 11th house, and Uranus interrelate to weave these egalitarian, individualistic, stubborn, unpredictable, avant garde, revolutionary energies into a (semi-)coherent whole.
P.S. One thing I ought to mention is that the energies of the 11th house often do not appear until middle-age in a chart. Planets in the 11th house are late-bloomers. Many with strong 11th houses are known for what they did later as opposed to earlier in life. The 11th house is the house of the harvesting of energies, after the accomplishment of the 10th, and before the dissolution of the 12th.
This later-in-life idea ties in nicely with the realm of Politics and activism, as politics is a not a career for the young. This is diametrically opposed to the 5th house: the house of Children and the Eternal Now.
