Coloring the BOTA Tarot

GlitterNova

This is more like the historical TdM, but it incorporates the RWS sunrise and adds a UFO :?: in the upper left corner. For comparison, I've included the TdM Death (from the magnificent CBD Tarot) in the attachments.

I realize that the BOTA is many worlds removed from traditional Renaissance Christian symbolism (or maybe not, I know little about Kabbalah) but that looks a heck of a lot like the word of God/the Holy Spirit as it was depicted in many Renaissance paintings. In many scenes of the Annunciation, for instance, there will be a little shooting flame, little angel or little flaming dove shooting down from the sky towards Mary representing her impregnation. Probably coincidental, but it's immediately what I thought of when I saw the card. Makes for an interesting addition to the Death card if nothing else.

I recently finished my coloring project. I used a book "Tarot Card Meanings: Fundamentals" and photocopied the pictures from the book and laid the colors with colored pencils. Then I studied the card for about six days before moving to the next card. I still haven't started doing the meditation practises found at the back of the book, but at a first glance they look pretty interesting, even if I'm not used to studying by doing meditations/contemplation.

I coloured one once. By the time I finished I hated my work so much I had to buy a new b/w copy :(

I just bought 2 copies of each size. They just arrived in the mail this week.

Now to decide on pens, or pencils, or ?, and then leap into the 1st card. :cool4:

Here is info on a BOTA recolored deck featured in Adam McLean's collection. I have attached the photo. So you should be able to recolor the BOTA and publish just like this deck was?

"29 May 2008 I recently managed to acquire a copy of a rather rare and beautiful Japanese tarot deck produced in 1999. The designs are entirely based on Paul Foster Case's B.O.T.A. deck but here they have been realised in a wonderfully luminous coloured deck created by Masanori Miyamoto. The deck was made in a small edition, the precise number is thought to be less than 50 copies. I have number 29. What makes this particularly special is the way that the cards have been printed onto a crushed textured metal reflective foil in strong saturated transparent colours. Thus the foil shines through the applied colour and makes the cards glow. Merely moving the cards slightly makes the colours shift and move, which produces a remarkable effect which cannot be shown by scanning onto the computer screen. These really have to be seen and handled to be appreciated. An expensive deck but a rather beautiful one. "
