Llewellyn Tarot - The Horned One

Celene

I must admit, when I saw this card my first thought was of Herne the Hunter in the old TV series Robin of Sherwood - anyone remember that?

(I'm new to this forum and hope that I've done the quote correctly!)
I LOVE that show, Lleminawc! That was one of my first thoughts when I saw this card, too - Herne the Hunter. I have a t-shirt from back in the day, across the shoulders on the back it reads: May Herne Protect Us.

I also love this depiction of The Devil, it has a very animistic quality and captures the essence of the Living Land. Ferguson's done a thing that so many other decks who use a Horned God to represent the Devil card didn't quite manage, which is to evoke that spirit.
My thought is that the Wild Herdsman cautions us to be aware when/if we let our appetites/excesses pull us out of balance with the healthy cycles and rhythms of nature.

I've only had this deck since the new moon/solar eclipse. So far The Wild Herdsman is my favourite card. It's also entirely possible that this is my favourite tarot deck I've ever owned.
