I learnt something, when sorting them. Once, there was a double suit system involved in early 17th century France.
Clubs = Flowers
Diamonds = Fruits or plants
Hearts = birds
Spades = animal
One from 1658 engaged in heraldic:
Clubs = Pope
Diamonds = Spain
Hearts = France
Spades = Germany
