Jps

Not at all fluent in Hebrew, most often, I use the JPS translation (Jewish Publication Society, 3rd Edition, 1992). While the Chabad-nicks and extreme orthodox may object (to an English Torah), more mainstream Jews would consider them among the most respected, authoratiative translators. JPS will leave a phrase blank, or well annotated, when the original Hebrew is simply not known. For example, the Torah admonishes us from eating bugs save for a few select species. Many of these animals, when written in the form of their ancient Hebrew names, are no longer known and associated by those names. This is indicated in the text. I believe JPS still offers sample or free translation of Torah on their website.
