I have tarot creating questions

Sleeping Magus

I have ideas galore for a tarot deck. Name and all the major arcana but 3 major problems stand in my way. First off, i dont have comentary from artists/tarot specialists. Secondly i notice the other unpublished decks and find myself bashful to show my own deck seeing as the others look so much more artistic than mine. Finally i have copyright issues, how can i copyright my work so it does not get stolen. If someone could please be kind enough to lend me thier insight on these issues i would be grateful to the utmost extent.

Sleeping Magus - First allow me to welcome you to the community. :) I'm glad you're confident enough to ask your questions and if you'll allow me, I'll try to answer.

Your first and second issues I see as very closely related. Is one of the reasons you don't have any feedback on your work because you're too shy to show it to anyone? Why don't you start a thread on your deck and post a link where we can see what you've got so far? You'll find that we're a pretty friendly bunch and that you're very likely to receive some good feedback. I'm fond of saying that if your work speaks to you that it is also likely to speak to others. ;)

For copyright issues you might like to read this thread. Also, as you are in the US, you might like to go to the horse's mouth at www.copyright.gov which would answer any question you might have on how copyright works.

Hope this helps.

Welcome, to the board, Magus.

Don't worry about your artistic skills, tarot decks range all over the board from fully realistic to impressionistic, and some are downright 'primitive' in art, so you won't be at the bottom of the scale by a long shot. Don't worry about that. Decks come in all stages of 'art'.

Is there a site we can see some images at?

i agree with what hudson said; don't worry about not being 'artistic' enough; the idea is that this is for YOU. i would personally love to see your cards and i am sure many others would as well. as far as i know from my experiences with this area (which were mostly way back when it was just getting off the ground and the boards were smaller) no one here is very harsh in their criticism; i think everything is pretty constructive. we all appreciate different types of art.

as for copyright, as i understand it, even if you don't register your work with a copyright office, as soon as it is published (i.e., written down, put online, drawn, whatever) you have copyright. you can register for copyright also, for a fee and an application submitted to the copyright office. there's more info on that at http://www.whatiscopyright.org

Meg was super on her info on copyright. the only thing I would add is that if you post large images online that you put a watermark over some of the images so that they can't be saved off line that way.

As to artist tallent. Even with professioal artists there will be ones that I love and ones that I really don't like. Don't be afraid to do something cause people might not like it. No matter how wonderful the artwork is there will still be people that prefer a different style. You can't please everyone so just please yourself (yes it is a great song lyric isn't it!)

Do the deck for yourself and what you like. Everything else will fall into place.

Good Luck!
Samantha
