Valentina Visconti

Sherryl Smith over on Facebook (Tarot History group) gave me this great information. All makes sense now :)

<Sherryl Smith quote>
I found this in Kaplan's Encyclopedia Vol. III, p. 528. He talks about how the deck describes Valentina's procession to meet her bridegroom. "...she stopped in Asti. There she enjoyed the Palio d'Asti, the Festival of Asti, which was celebrated with games, horse races, competitions between vintners, feasts and processions. The festival had taken place regularly since 1275 in honor of Asti's patron saint, Secundo, and it is still held every year. Five of the ten extra cards....represent prizes given to the winners of the horse races; these are Palio (banner), Speroni (spurs), Monere (coins), Gallo (cock), and Acciuga (anchovies). The remaining five cards represent the attributes necessary to win the Palio: Conoscenza (knowledge), Coraggio (courage), Intrigo (Intrigue), Astuzia (astuteness), and Liberta (freedom)."
