December 25th has been a somewhat contentious date for a long time now. Do we have some reason to think that it really is the day of Christ's birth?

It is a day formally appropriated by some Christian sects to celebrate the birth of Christ - the exact day (if ever there was such a 'historical' event) is unknown... and irrelevant?
