What do you desire in deck creation?

OH yes - a separate section for these would be great. I don't even mind if they (tarot and oracles - after all, many tarotistas are interested in Lenormands as well, for instance) are in there together, as long as I never again accidentally go back after looking at something and accidentally order a card GAME with a very similar name. (Entirely my own fault, and it will make a nice Christmas gift for someone - but when it arrived I could not relate it to the thread here discussing it till I suddenly realised that was because it wasn't the deck they were all discussing !)

Winterchild - PM me about which deck you mean - if it is the Lenormand I think it might have been, I may be able to help...

No worries... a Tarot deck is traditionally a deck of 78 cards, 22 Majors and 56 Minor Arcana cards. There are many variations within this outline but they do usually conform to these basics... and follw one or other of the Tarot "systems", ie Thoth, Rider Waite or the Tarot de Marseilles. Although there are different ways of reading and interpreting the cards within the systems there are many similarities and they are all Tarot.

An Oracle deck is a divination deck that subscribes to no set pattern, it can be cards, stones, sticks.....whatever, but is often cards. Examples are like the Rider Waite tarot is very definitely Tarot as is the Thoth, Golden Dawn and the Tarot de Marseilles decks. Lenormand's are classed as Oracle decks.

Hope this helps :) Other may have better explanations!
Let us also not forget that, unlike the non-Tarot oracles, some Tarots are used in certain games. Here's an example of a Tarot Nouveau deck.

I consider these to be Tarot as they do conform to the standard 4*14+22=78 structure although they lack the usual symbolism of a reading Tarot and are not normally used in divination. As an object, I would have to say they are closer to Tarot than Oracle cards. Besides my own Trionfi: Tarot Playing Cards, there are also different versions of The Anaithnid Tarot available at TGC. Both Trionfi and Anaithnid are designed with game playing in mind and they are under the Tarot category.

On oracle decks, there are two broad types. There's the older type such as Etteilla's Piquet deck or decks attributed to Lenormand which are based on existing playing card structures. The Lenormand, for example, is based on the structure of the 36 card deck common in Germany.

I see quite a lot of Lenormand type decks at the TGC now. There are more modern types of oracles such as Angel cards which don't conform to any such structure. http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/cards/angel-therapy/

Thank you both for the excellent explanations. That helps a lot.

Dear Game Crafter :(

I am sorry to have to report that I have just this moment received - in the UK - a small deck - at least with no game box  - mailed from you - EASILY fittable into a small standard sized mailing box - in a box 10 inches square and 3 inches deep, with the usual brown paper added.

Just so you know that this isn't working out quite as you believe...

Sorry :(

LOL!

Smaller is BETTER.

Say guys, you can get great deals on sturdy small boxes 100% mailable from both Browncor.com and Uline.com, no minimum required, free catalog from them, next day shipping. They're the cheapest on the internet that I've found. They ship flat too.

A 3 x 2 x 6" box would fit most decks.
http://www.uline.com/BL_1403/Literature-Mailers-White the business card size or better yet the 'small electronics' would work fine.

Or here - $14 for a case of 60 in size 6x4x2"
http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/p...orrugatedLiterature-Bookfol/6-x-4-x-2-mailers These would fit any deck without the added size/weight/packaging. Their white chip carton in the same size is 250 boxes for $66. That's 26 cents per box.

Ok, I've discovered the root of this issue.

The box the author has selected is too small for the booklets the author has in the game. This means that the game is now in an erroneous state and rather than just giving up, the site software assumes a base footprint of the items contained in the game, which in this case turns out to be: 9.50x8.25x0.24 in. The shipping container we have that will work for first class shipments of that size is the box you received.

Had the author either chosen a booklet size that would fit in the box, or used a box that would fit the booklets, then the game would have shipped in a much smaller shipping container.

Likewise, when a game gets published to our shop (which the author in this case did not do), she would have received a warning telling her the items don't fit into the box, and would not have been allowed to publish it to the shop. We cannot provide this warning before publishing, because before publishing we have to assume that the game is being edited, and therefore not in its final form. We also could stop the author from being able to buy the game in this state, however, many authors choose to buy games that are either incomplete, or have no box at all, so we choose not to prevent them from buying their unpublished game.

Hopefully this makes clear why you received a larger than normal shipping container, and will allow those reading this post to avoid this complication in the future.

OK - I shall be in touch with the creator !!! Fair enough - I see your point though I would (as I have PMd) have packaged the very SLIM and pliable booklets in the small box anyway ! But I didn't have to PAY the extra, so I'm OK all round..
