AE Waite a "dull duffer"?

I recently found a book called The Holy Kabbalah by AE Waite in a second-hand shop, which is apparently a compilation of two separate volumes with longer titles. Subsequently I noticed that Israel Regardie is very scornful of Waite's scholarship in his preface to 777, claiming that Waite's knowledge of Latin and Hebrew was deficient and that he relied on translations by elderly Anglican clergymen. Anyone have any informed views on this?
