Trimmed Borders/Altered Decks

CharlotteK

Thanks! :) I'm very pleased with how they turned out. I will definitely do some more edging of decks with black borders, but am looking into archival ink as I read that Sharpie ink fades over time.

I have trimmed or colored the borders of quite a few decks...

first, it's this standard RWS that was enclosed in a book.. you had to pull out the cards out of the cardboard.. so what was left was a nasty border with those little things sticking out (that were attached to the cardboard..) ah, I don't know how to explain it, even in my native language, but anyway, here it's how it looks like after the trim+corner cutted http://imgur.com/a/Jl1Tt

second, Chrysalis http://imgur.com/a/5tdol gilded edges.. I like it

third, Deviant Moon http://imgur.com/a/XSGtW also only edges.. Dark brown with a sheen.. better than I expected, since I thought it was gonna clash with the brown of the cards...

fourth, http://imgur.com/a/pdi3t Hidden Realm.. This came out so beautiful.. Lavender-ish edges that match up nicely with the silver/grey back of the cards..

fifth, Illuminati, the edition without gilded edges and with a thin black border around pictures http://imgur.com/a/Xjs8t

sixth, Ludy Lescot, same as Illuminati, blackened the edges.. But sadly I don't have the pictures, maybe I'll ad them later (I don't have the cards nearby..)

seventh, Mary-El.. I completely cut all the borders, rounded the corners, written the title of the card with a golden pen, and then blackened the edges. I kind of regret the last step, I'm not sure it's better this way, especially since I created a very thin, but still bothersome black border around the pictures.. all in all still glad I've done it http://imgur.com/a/gRFxa

and eighth, last one for now is also my fav edit of the deck, Night Sun http://imgur.com/a/G77dM I've cut the borders which made the cards really small and therefore perfect for my tiny hands.. gilded the edges and the shade of gold is PERFECT for the back of the cards (and the front).. rounded the corners, too, of course... in short, LOVE IT

I really like your trimmed and edged decks krisa! I too have a trimmed RWS. Some people think it looks a little weird trimmed since it's so iconic and they're used to the borders, but I definetely think it works. Mine is The Original RWS and the pictures are not uniform in size so my deck is very uneven since I chose to cut around them. Still usable though. Is yours the same way? That Night Sun deck looks very fancy with all the gold too :D

Ah, thank you :D
No, mine is quite even (except for where I didn't cut it carefuly enough, oops).

Lo Scarabeo Tarot

Well, for some unknown reason LoScar made the card backs in silver and the card border gold. Curious why when this is from the deluxe edition that included a black bag with the LoScar logo in gold. Why oh why wasn't the logo in gold on the card backs? :/

Anyhoo, I trimmed it down to the border and edged it in gold because it was more important to me for the edge on the face cards to match the border instead of the sides to match the logo on the card backs.

It looks much better from the chipped edges of the original condition. See here:

Looks great, G6! I like that you went for gold to match the front. (Agree about the silver logo )

Thanks, Rose! That deck was from the trade train. Just needed a lil' pimping. šŸ˜Ž

The Heart of Faerie Oracle by Brian & Wendy Froud - EDGED IN BRONZE

Just got this gem of a deck in a trade. I began edging it with Bic Mark It pen in Bronze, which ran dry. They only had the Sharpie metalics at the store, so I finished it with the Sharpie Bronze. In retrospect the Sharpie Gold would have been a match for the Bic Bronze, so I wound up with a different color than I intended. You can see from the card backs the gold would have been more the color of the border stripes.

Anyhoo, here are the BEFORE & AFTER PICS:

Edged my new Cult of Weimar deck. Nearly went for black, but opted for dark grey thinking I can always go black if not happy. But I think it works well :)

Dark grey looks great for this deck!
For my Tinker's Damn I think it would be a great choice as well; I read in another thread that Avery Marks-A-Lot are impeccable and I don't want to take a risk (if the marker leaves a few traces for example on my hands or on a cloth bag, I don't know).
Nevertheless with Avery I didn't find a lot of colors, therefore I ordered some black markers.
Sharpie markers (I guess you use Sharpie) offers probably more choice!

In any case, Dark grey looks a good choice, probably better than black!
