Ancient Playing Cards

Little Baron

Hi Everyone

I have just finished looking through a website that Kara posted about playing cards and I must say that I was fascinated; it was really interesting and has got me so excited about using playing cards for fortune telling. The web-mistresses explanations were so clear and I really can imagine using her teachings sooner, rather than later. Excellent stuff; thanks Kara.

What I wanted to ask as I have searched but not found much, is, where can I get an old looking set of playing cards; I am in the uk. I looked on a few sites but didn't find quite what I was looking for; not exactly sure what that is. Any ideas?

The last set discussed have two samples of old looking designs

The Jane Lyle Fortune-Teller Pack might be what you are looking for...has pretty cards.

Do you want an older English design?

Hodges' astrological cards look old and pretty, with the French poker pips we are used to seeing:

And if you ever get time to explore such histories and collecting:

I recently bought a reproduction of old Portugese-Japanese playing cards...but they are so small that I am almost afraid I'll lose them. I'm looking for a slightly bigger 'ancient' style...let me know if you are interested, as I'm looking at Mt. Hood's designs now.

Thank you both. Have spent the last hour looking through the catalogue. Some very nice cards there; there was a pack illustrated with old circus illustrations, which is lovely and a nice lithuwanian deck. And all so cheap as well ...

Will stick with my cheap deck at the moment, and buy a few of the others in time.

Great links ... cheers!

Have replied to your other thread on the 'playing card courts' with very interesting information about playing card decks.

I have used Jane Lyles playing card deck, a few years ago and somehow they just didn't feel right, but now realising why, according to the secret esoteric order, only to use cards for divination purposes that have the original design. Not to alter, deface or change in anyway.

Well, now, that's interesting ... I'm coming in late on these cartomancy threads. ~~
So I have been to the UK site showing different court cards, and the post about why the old card designs are best - not to use new designs or large or smaller decks. Looks like my idea of the super-size jumbo cards may not work then ... !

I never thought much about 'which' card type to use. Cards is cards, right? Apparently not. So much to learn ... so little time. *sigh*

Now to find that link of Kara's that everone's posting that they went to ... and wouldn't you know it, I can't find the thread where she posted it.
