Proposals

Mistteak

OK. I have committed myself (mentally) to give this creating a deck a go (equine based). I will look for the obvious path first which is getting the deck published by a reputable publisher.

I have read that you do not need an agent for most of them. And that some of them will take proposals, and start the process before completion.

So if you were doing a proposal, what would you include?? I have done business proposals, but this is a little slanted from that.

I am not concerned if the deck is refused before completion at proposal stage, as they may just need more then one look at it.. :)

Also have you hear if publishers can assist in finding an artist?

Thanks in advance - I will look this avenue first, then look to go self published route closer to completion.

Thanks, I had seen the First site, not the second. I will poke along, and enquire in writing about submission procedures. best way to find out i suppose. See if they will accept the concept/idea .. and help arrange artist, that they are happy with.

if not, it will stay in my head till I run into someone willing to go with me on it. :p

who else publishes Tarot, US games, Llewellen, Lo Scarabeo, ???

Thanks so much! .. this is very helpful. Reading thru publishers "wants" they are happy for partially completed proposals as long as you fulfil there needs and tick all the boxes, and I can show and explain why its not completed, why i think its going to be published, and what about it is different to what they already have.

I understand that I will be on my own for most of this. Would have been nice to find a local artist to go 50/50 .. but being that it is 78 drawings /paintings .. they want commission or for me to buy the pieces - but they don't want to loose the digital rights .. But I shall scout around on Diviant art.

This is all good info for when I think I have competed enough for a little proposal. At least I know how, and who to send it to. if they fail, I can focus on self publish. But getting it all out of my head on paper is the first thing.

Even if you do not go the self-pub route you may find a lot of help in this thread. :)

Thanks Tarot Bear .. Very very informative. But it does put me in that odd category .. See I have no issue with putting pen to paper and getting the Book written, I doubt I would struggle with the description of the care and the card meanings, or putting on paper a description on what the card should look like, as a guide for the artist .. My issue is going to be finding someone to help put that vision on paper.

The ideas on individual cards, and different versions on the RWS was very informative. Fitted in with my Thoughts, now I have more to think about.

the info on the shrinking of the images was also good. Means When I think about what to put in .. I need to think of that .. I had not till now.

But those links to diviant art are a great start. SO, My plan is to get cracking on the meanings, the visions of the 78 cards (OK and Toying with a FUN extra card for kicks)

And then, If I have not managed to talk someone into drawing my images .. I can be sure to put a proposal out .. and see who would like to go into creating a deck with me ..

I at least am under no illusions about the chances of being published. This is for me, but something I think the tarot world will enjoy (OK most not all). I am under no illusions about the time this will take.

I think that that is a good thing, it means that I can take my time, get it right, and do it right from the start. These threads and all this info, is very very informative.

Yes - scour the forums! On The Game Crafter someone is always looking for an artist for their art - they have a forum for those seeking one or offering their services.

Remember - these people need to be paid. You also need a contract 'in case' they or you 'pull out' of the deal. An Artist is 'work for hire'; they do not get a part of the royalties from deck sales.

IMHO - just to be realistic - although many companies such as Lo Scarobeo and Llewellyn have Art Departments and artists - unless you can 'wow' them with a terrific, original, and totally impressive idea for a deck that they will assign you an artist for your deck - you will be better off getting your own artist; in that way if the Big Boy companies turn you down you still have images to self-publish.

There are many deck creators on AT; perhaps you should start asking around .... ?

Thanks again. I think that as there is a lot of repetitive work in tarot, and to get the idea clear, I will need to look at the suites as a whole, once my vision is written, then it will be easier for the artist to get it.. I am going to get all my stuff down on paper. Then I will look at a proposal, and locating an artist.

So I shall get cracking - and you may hear from me in 8-12 months .. *grin*

Anyone know what the going rate is for artists to do 78 cards? roughly?
