I received this deck last week and find it so interesting. For instance I get the feeling this deck was made for low lighting, because the patterns really pop as the room gets darker. But maybe that is just me!
I am enjoying the titles on the cards, even though they are in french. I can figure out what some of them mean, but others I really don’t know. To me, the meanings of the cards are clear enough - at least the majors and the courts. But here is the thing - the lwb that came with the deck! It is a fine lwb and I am not complaining about it, but it is a little off. For one thing it lists the fool as 0 and the first card. In this deck the fool is 78. In the book the cards are all listed in numerical order.
And then the meanings seem to be different from what I am getting. For example No. 18 is titled ‘Traitre’ and reversed it called ‘faux devot’ , on the sides it is named Le Capucin. It shows a man near a building with a lantern and a cane. He is dressed in robes and there is a dog trying to get his attention. So I see the words traitor and faux devotee plus a touch of the fool card too.
Here is what the book says…No. 18 The Hermit: Austerity, Reflection. Preparation. Experience. Upside down: Betrayal. Solitude. Fruitless action.
To me it is as if someone who knows tarot wrote this book. I am not sure that these cards really line up with the tarot, perhaps it is more of an oracle deck. These things are minor, and this is not taking anything away from my enjoyment of the deck. I think it is kind of quirky and a bit cheeky and the lwb reflects that vibe. Has anyone else experienced this slight disconnect between the cards and the lwb?
