Are there any scholarly books about tarot?

Are there any scholarly books about tarot?

Not necessary books written by people whom themselves practice and work with tarot, but by someone with a formal education written as a scholarly study of the subject (From the perspective of religion, history or even art).

A serious look at tarot "from the outside- looking in" so to say.

Loads. Take a look at the books section, top right, and the tarot books section.

To Rodney's list, I will add:

Cynthia Giles: The Tarot: History, Mystery and Lore.
Several scholarly books about the Thoth - DuQuette and Snuffin spring to mind.
Giordano Berti on the Visconti decks.
Richard Cavendish (The Tarot) is not taken as seriously as he should be
Decker - The Esoteric Tarot
Alfred Douglas: The Tarot: Origins, and Uses of the cards
Paul Huson: Mystical Origins of Tarot

I wish you would have read my post a little better:

Paul Huson - Occultist
Ron Decker - Occultist
Stuart Kaplan - Publisher of tarot decks

Michael Dummett - Actual scholar

Just because you are an occult practitioner - or indeed a publisher - does not mean you cannot be scholarly. I thought your post was asking for scholarly books. All those listed are scholarly.

I was about to mention Adam McLean's tarot course - art-based - but I suppose that won't be any use to you either, as although he has university degrees, he practises alchemy...

You're welcome. Considering no one responded to your question in 19 hours, I would've thought too much info would've been preferable to none.

And as gregory pointed out just because one is an occultist or a publisher doesn't mean they can't produce a scholarly work.

You said, "not necessarily books written by people whom themselves practice and work with tarot...." You didn't say "No books" written by such people. So if you didn't want recommendations for such books, your post should've been worded better.

One reason Kaplan publishes is that he knows a lot.

People who write about tarot in a scholarly way tend to know enough about it that they might - shock horror - use the cards.... Hell, even I (with respectable post grad and Master's degrees) collected and studied for years before I took to reading. Now - not that I write about it - but would that make me scholarly enough ? Guess not. :D

You are losing out by your artificial restrictions.

Yikes :bugeyed:

Well, someone recommended A Cultural History of Tarot by Helen Farley to me before, but it was too expensive. Maybe check the libraries (the university library in my area allows non-students as well) - you might find something interesting.
