Laser pointers aren't dangerous in that sense. My dogs and cats love to play with them too. The only thing you should be aware of is that it can damage, or, at the very least, cause pain, when directed at the eye for certain lengths of time.

Exactly... first, this isn't a universal thing; crystals aren't always displayed as such.
It's a visual effect, it makes them more appealing to look at, it attracts people... they're coloured lights.
