Celtic Cross Interpretations (CCI)/3 Card Interpretations (3CI) Discussion Thread

rwcarter

Welcome to the Celtic Cross Interpretations (CCI) and 3 Card Interpretations (3CI) discussion thread!

Overview
Lady Iron Side had the idea of working together to come up with potential meanings for each Tarot card in each of the positions of the Celtic Cross and the more frequently used 3 Card spreads (Past/Present/Future, Mind/Body/Soul, etc.). A daunting task to be sure, but the UTC Moderators believe that the end result will be a valuable resource for current and future members who need help with figuring out what cards can mean when they’re in a spread.

The Spreads

Celtic Cross
As there are multiple versions of the Celtic Cross spread, and as we’re unlikely to come to a consensus on what the most used of the variants is, we’re going to use the version that comes with the Pictorial Key to the Tarot as that’s the companion book to the Rider Waite deck. That spread is laid out like this:

………3……………10
……………………….
………………………9
6…..1x2…..5…….
………………………8
……………………….
.…….4……...……7

The positional meanings are as follows:
 1. What covers him (situation)
 2. What crosses him (obstacles or what’s creating conflict)
 3. What crowns him (atmosphere that currently hangs over the Querent)
 4. What is beneath him (the foundation that created the present situation)
 5. What is behind him (the past)
 6. What is before him (the near future)
 7. Himself (Querent’s attitude or opinion regarding the question)
 8. His house (home life, family and friends and how they affect the Querent)
 9. His hopes and fears (what the Querent both hopes and fears about the situation)
 10. What will come (the outcome)
If the Celtic Cross you use bears little resemblance to this one, please post in this thread to get ideas about which position is closest to the position you’re using.

3 Card Spreads
There are probably more 3 card spreads than there are variations on the Celtic Cross. As it’s impossible to cover them all, we’ll start with the following ones:
 • 1-Mind. 2-Body, 3-Soul
 • 1-Past, 2-Present, 3-future
 • 1-Beginning, 2-Middle, 3-End
 • 1-Situation, 2-Advice, 3-Outcome
 • 1-Option one, 2-The issue, 3-Option Two
 • 1-Querent, 2-The relationship, 3-Partner
 • 1-Problem or Issue, 2-What Hinders, 3-What Helps
 • 1-What to Avoid, 2-The issue, 3-What to Do

Categories
There are lots of categories on which readings are done. Again, we won’t be able to cover them all, but we’ll start with the following:
 • Relationships (potential, new, good, bad)
 • Work/Career
 • Money/Finances
 • Decision-making
 • Conflict
 • Self-Improvement/Spiritual Growth

Starting Threads
Anyone is welcome to start a thread at any time, but there are certain conventions that need to be followed so that the threads are properly identified and then can be added to the master index.

Each thread title must be in the form of Project: Card – Position where
 • Project = CCI, 3CI or CCI/3CI if the position (like “Past” or “Outcome”) is applicable to both projects
 • Card is the tarot card being discussed (such as Fool or 3 Wands), and please do not abbreviate the card titles
 • Position is the position in the appropriate spread
So a proper thread title would be CCI: Fool – His House or 3CI: 4 Swords – End or CCI/3CI: 6 Pentacles – Outcome

Threads need to stay general. So it’s OK to start a thread on what the 9 Cups means in the Soul position in a Relationship question. But if you want help with what the 9 Cups means in the Soul position of the relationship reading you did for you and your significant other, then you should start a non-CCI/3CI thread for that question in UTC.

Please be considerate of the other members who start non CCI/3CI threads in UTC. We don't want those threads to get lost in the shuffle of multiple CCI/3CI threads going on at the same time.

Posting in Threads
When posting in a CCI or 3CI thread, please preface your interpretations with what category the interpretation pertains to. The thread CCI: Fool – His House will contain interpretations from the various categories listed above. If an interpretation isn't linked to a specific category it may not be clear which category is being covered in the interpretation.

The index thread can be found here.

If you have any questions about this project, feel free to post them in this thread, or feel free to PM the UTC Moderators.

this sounds like a good idea and an excersise , not to mention people always have problems interpreting seemingly "negative " cards as positive , and positive cards as negative. this should help with that.
