Aquarian New Moon

The new moon in Aquarius this year falls on Jan 21, 1:06 pm PST. It also signals the beginning of the Chinese new year which is a time to look forward to a whole new cycle in growth. As someone once said to me, it is a breath of fresh air in the celestial cycles.

This new moon is pretty balanced in terms of element and modality. There are a few signatures to bear in mind.

First, the sun-moon conjunction creates a semisextile to Uranus, modern ruler of Aquarius. This again emphasizes the fresh quality of the new moon, but also brings a colouring of empathy with Uranus just having entered watery Pisces.

Currently, Mercury is in Capricorn being opposed by its depositor Saturn, who happens to be in retrograde. This creates a slowing influence on speedy Mercury which may be frustrating, especially with a wide sextile from impatient Uranus. Communication may come in fits and starts, speeding ahead with innovative ideas but quickly getting bogged down in details. Venus, who is now exalted in Pisces lends a helping hand, providing a gentle exact trine to Saturn and a tight sextile to Mercury. Any inconsistencies in communication may be smoothed over with forgiveness and understanding.

Pluto is the other planet to watch this lunation, forming a square to a restricted retrograded Jupiter (in Virgo) and a trine from a headstrong Arian Mars. While the Mars-Pluto energy gives a powerful drive for change which suits our Aquarian new moon, Pluto’s square to its depositor (Pluto is in Sagittarius) makes for potential abuses of power. There is a sense that Mercury, being pulled in different directions and getting sucked into details only exacerbates this square, for this ego (Mars) driven Pluto may manipulate towards dogmatic means by warping details. A domineering attitude is indicated by the skies, and a Piscean Venus moving to close a T square between Jupiter and Pluto is only too happy to submit.

Overall, fresh and even profound changes are possible with this lunation, but it may be difficult to keep a clear, even head about things.
