From 316 in 2008, I'm now up to 723 combined tarot and oracle books including different editions of the same book (which is why titles will be listed twice).
It's comforting to know that in 16 months my tarot/oracle book collection has only grown by 38 titles! Lack of space and funds will do a lot to curb the book buying habit. ;)

Hermeticism. NY: Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam, 2002. (C list. There is very little of

the Tarot here. Rather, the author uses each of the 22 Trumps to launch a chapter

expounding his own idea of Christian mysticism. Sometimes the launch point is one

insightful facet of the card, but more often it is a misunderstanding of its meaning)

fundamental. Consistent with Golden Dawn attributes. Weak history. Has a useful

summary of the 10 numbers)

145-210. (B list. Earlier image descriptions and divinatory meanings)

_____The Book of Thoth. NY: Lancer, n.p.d., first published 1944. (A list. Historically

important. The first to seriously analyze the symbols as portmanteaus. Extensive

correspondences, many useful, with a few fundamental errors worth correcting.

Presents the seeds of a workable Yijing-Tarot relationship. Card meanings are still

far from well-rounded. Should be read with more skeptical and critical thinking skills

than most people are capable of. See DuQuette)

important original scoping of approaches to the cards, from the most rational and

about the trumps)

Noble, Vicki. Motherpeace: A Way to the Goddess through Myth, Art and Tarot. SF:

the Tarot evolved out of vague, chaotic and fanciful beginnings, instead of a perfect,

golden-age system, this book provides it. Gives us reduction numerology and

reinforces the decans hypothesis. Little in the way of useful content)

Payne-Towler, Christine. The Underground Stream: Esoteric Tarot Revealed. Eugene, OR:

Noreah Press, 1999. (C list. Could have been a valuable book, particularly for icon

(B list. A digest of numerous Tarot authors)

Rosengarten, Arthur. Tarot and Psychology: Spectrums of Possibility. St. Paul, MN:

Paragon House, 2000. (C list. Original material in the sections on card meanings.

Broader than Jungian in scope. Gets sloppy in places, confusing the cards with

I have Tarot 101 and Pictorial key to the tarot which came with my PCS commemorative pack.

I've been working through Tarot 101 for a while, at first it was going well. I have learned a lot from it. However, I'm not even halfway through, and I've lost all motivation for this book. I can't handle all the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings references. She seems to mostly references books and movies I cannot stand :D

But also, while I like her writing style and knowledge, I don't like the order the cards are introduced in, and it makes my learning feel all over the place. I'm going to move this book on, once I've replaced it with Around the Tarot in 78 Days. I really do only want to work through one book at a time.

I didn't realise people were also posting their companion books! Mine are:

Victorian Fairy Tarot (I wouldn't describe it as a suitable resource for learning tarot in general, but it is wonderful for this deck, and I absolutely love every single thing I read in it, as I love fairies and this deck)

Wildwood Tarot. I really enjoy this book. Again, not suitable for learning basic tarot, nor a beginner (which I can attest to, as this was my first ever tarot deck, and I had to put it away, buy a simple tarot deck, then come back to it later!), but wonderful insights for this deck in particular, and I thoroughly enjoy the perspective of this book and deck.

Touchstone Tarot. I wish this was my first deck and book! The explanations are short, simple, and what I love, is that it also tells you the meanings of a reading if you have multiples of a number, court or major arcana in the reading. It also tells you what it means if you have multiples of a suit. None of this had occurred to me, until I recently got this deck, and I've found it's really given more life and depth to my readings! In fact, I often pull this book out to help even when I'm learning on other decks. Of course, my favourite part of this book is that it gives a basic reversal meaning, so now I'm starting to dabble in reversals, but only with this deck for now.

Housewives Tarot. This is a little booklet, and heavily themed, but surprisingly, this makes the concepts so simple to grasp, while making you look at it differently to how we're normally taught. My daughter and I have both been mind blown at how ridiculously simply they've explained meanings! Also, each meaning is delivered with a ton of humour, which makes it fun at the same time.

I think that's it?

Oh sorry. I listed the companion books that I keep on a special bookshelf and not with the deck. Once we start listing LWBs it will become really too much.... I can delete it if it's confusing!

I have too many "C-list" books to bother mentioning, so I'll just list the books that I refer to with some frequency; as MKG suggests, these days I mainly use books to confirm that my more imaginative insights have at least tentative roots within the envelope of established knowledge, from which I then elaborate using inspiration and intuition. It serves as a form of "self-check" or touchstone when my random ideas get too far ahead of my internalized understanding and experience. With a handful of exceptions, I haven't been able to "read" all the way through most modern tarot books for some time; either the banality or the psychobabble does me in.

The Pictorial Key to the Tarot, Arthur Edward Waite
The Tarot Revealed, Eden Gray
The Tarot, Paul Foster Case
The Tarot, Joseph Maxwell
The Qabalistic Tarot, Robert Wang

777 and Other Qabalistic Writings, Aleister Crowley (for the tables of correspondences)

Companion Books vs LWBs

I have not listed LWBs but have listed books that are either included with the deck in a kit form or are purchased separately. I would've included the large format book that accompanies the New Vision deck, but I wouldn't have included the LWB that came with it. I would've included the thicker book that came with the Faery Wicca or the Golden Dawn Magical Tarot, but not the LWB that came with the Navigators Tarot of the Mystic SEA.
