I found the metaphor step quite difficult as well, but I then found some of the later exercises much easier than this one. I think it really comes down to how we individually relate to certain things (i.e. metaphors and specific cards/suits).

Think about this as an opportunity to try 21 different ways to read a card, from which once all tried you can pick and choose the ones that work best for you. I know I have already found some that I have definetly incorporated into how I read.

1) I found this pretty difficult at first because the imagery from this deck is so different for the 5 of pents than other decks. Once I got into it though I think I went ok.

- What I cant see wont hurt me
- The smaller ones always get eaten
- A new day, a new start *
- Its easier to hide away

Step 8.1a ~ Find other metaphors for the V of Pentacles (Disks) in your chosen deck, use the image on the card.

5’s
· a fool and his money are soon parted**

Step 8: Metaphors (Queen of Swords - Druidcraft)
Part I

8-1-1; Find other metaphors for the Five of Pentacles in your chosen deck. Use the image that is on the card.

Wow, the Druidcraft 5 of Pentacles is very different visually from what I'm used to. In this card a young woman is leaning against a tree that shows tiny buds of growth. She has her arms upraised and is burying her face in the crook of her arms. Ahead of her behind the tree, there is a deep green meadow and a sun that seems to be in the mid-morning or late afternoon position and a the silhouette of a hare being chased by a hound is visible along the horizon. The woman wears a bright yellow gown covered by a bright blue cloak and five pentacles hang in a row on a chain from her red belt (all primary colors).

Metaphors:
burying one's head in the sand
hiding from adversity
it's a dog eat dog world
lower on the food chain
same sh*t, new day
run from what's hounding you
no rest for the weary
tightening one's belt
chase or be chased
out of the loop (because she stands apart from the hound and hare - the food chain)
Billy Joel's "Movin' Out" - stepping away from the rat race.
the paperchase (pen and paper game of Hare and Hound, and also a reference to the stressful aspects of the white collar world)
every man for himself

8-1-2; Find phrases that relate specifically to the number five and to the suit of pentacles. Mary Greer reminds us that these phrases, being generally related to "fives" or to "pentacles" may not have the sharpness or intensity that you feel for/from the card image.

Fives:
destabilization of one's material life
a change in one's health
instability of one's survival needs
destruction to make way for creation
a disturbance in the natural order
overthrow of complacency
trials and tribulations
despair over the cruelty of life

Pentacles:
the results of the hunt
security in an uncertain world
using animal instinct to stay ahead of the pack
skill in chasing after one's material needs
worried about survival
ambitiously engaged in the rat race
a change in one's social status
stress over finances
your loss is my gain/your gain is my loss

8-1-3; Which phrases noted in 8-1-2 do not work for you? Which do? When you consider these final choices then you have made a highly personal list that can serve as a model for many lists for your decks cards.

it's a dog eat dog world
lower on the food chain
run from what's hounding you
no rest for the weary
tightening one's belt
chase or be chased
out of the loop
turning your back on the rat race.
every man for himself
destabilization of one's material life
destruction to make way for creation
despair over the cruelty of life
security in an uncertain world
worried about survival
a change in one's social status
stress over finances
your loss is my gain/your gain is my loss

The 21 ways step 8, part 1.

The 21 ways – step 8.1
Druidcraft
The five of pentacles.
I see that Le Fey has done a huge job on it. I tried not to look too closely, and have done it anyway.;)

8.1. Not an easy one this. I don’t use metaphors much myself, well I don’t think I do – I will be listening to myself closely for the next few weeks! I think some of Greer’s metaphors are really expressions. That is they are not really true metaphors. In someway I think her use is too open. I understand that the card in itself can be seen and used metaphorically. I see that the lady in my card, standing face covered behind a tree (she may even be studying the insects) is not aware of her surroundings. The surroundings are light and open, with a dog chasing a hare downhill. I can see the symbolism being transferred over to a metaphorical analyse. Like:

Not seeing the wood for the trees
Light at the end of the tunnel
Walking like the dead
Its all over but the crying

8.1.2
The five in pentacles.
Trail and hardship
Changes may be big
Dealing with loss
Being upset and alone
Being pushed outside
Experiencing hardship
Losing love and respect
Feeling everything is hopeless
Going through a crisis

8.1.3
Just 3 metaphors seemed to cover my card from the list. With my own thats seven.

*Crippled spirit
*Looking for shelter
*Cold comfort
