Health questions are always complicated with the Tarot...some use the cups, because our body is mostly water. Others prefer pentacles, because they relate to earth = material world, and since the body is our physical part... Cups are usually related to feelings.

I guess it's a matter of choice. But i still think health readings are hard to do...you can ask 'will my treatment work?', but not if there's any sickness coming. Unless you consider the five of pentacles...in RW it shows some poor people, possibly with health problems. That could mean sickness, but depends on the context etc.

You know, that's an interesting question. I'll study it more myself :)

I tend to give health questions a wide berth, simply because I'm not a health professional (at least, not a doctor or nurse). I advise them to seek a professional's advice.

surely if you just did a general reading for that person, if there was any sort of health problem , it would show in the reading and then you can advise them to go and get checked out... Strength rev would tell me that something wasnt right, also 4 swds rev.

I'd say it depends on the health issue.

I've done precious few healthrelated readings but recall some pretty strong diffrences between them. Two specifically.

One was showing an imbalance around the chestarea (don't recall what card but it was cups) and the clarification came out Temperance.
The problem was severe astma and occational fluid in the lungs as a result.

The other was wands and strength.
Past, Ace of wands and another wand-card showing problems in the back, pains, strain, mostly related to the lower back. Ending in Strength, where the querent had gotten further to a solution by strenthening the muscles in the back to take some of the pressure off the spine.

So, I can't really see one specific suit related to health-issues. Rather different cards coming up depending on what needs to be highlighted.

Swords = Illness/Pentacles = Health

I think we're all in agreement that Health issues should be handled carefully, cautiously, and with an emphasis that a physician is the only one who can really diagnosis such things.

That said, there are, traditionally, two suits for health, especially with Rider-Waite: Pentacles and Swords.

Pentacles indicates good health--a strong, hearty body. Swords is, well, health problems. The Judgement card can also indicate a time in the hospital recovering. Cups can be used for mental health or drug-alchohol illness. Wands for illnesses that lack energy--the ones where the person always feels tired. Or, alternately, for people who feel manic or have good energy.

You need to mix imagination and creativity to understand which health issues the cards might be telling you about. For example, 10/Swords might indicate serious back problems (yes, it's funny, but apt, no?). 9/Swords sleep, nervous, or headache problems, 8/Swords problems with movement or sight. You begin to get the idea. Meanwhile, 2/Pentacles indicates good hand-eye coordination, 4/pents might indicate a health nut whose gone overboard in his health routine and can't relax.

Another thing you can do is use a Zodiac spread for health issues. As each Zodiac sign rules over a part of the body, the card could indicate whether that part is in good health or not. So, the card in Aries tells you how the "head" is doing.

Half an hour before I went for my final results about whether the 48 week program of pegulated infereron injections and anti-viral tablets had worked to 'cure' my Hepatitis C, I chose 3 cards. They had no specific positions. Using a Waite deck, the cards : 5 of Pentacles, 5 of cups, 6 of Pentacles.

5 of Pentacles, for me, referred to the hardship, both illness-wise, and financially that I have experienced as a result of the illness. The 5 of cups indicated that there would be disappointment with the results of the treatments, and finally, the 6 represents the 'Man' - the need for the government to continue to dole out my disability pension.

Saw the specialist ... and yes, I still have Hepatitis C, and yes I was disappointed, and yes, I still receive disability.

As a general practice, I don't do health readings, except in very specific circumstances, and only for myself. For example, "How will my current health status impact upon X?" or, "Taking into consideration my current health issues, What stategies and practices do I need to use to enable me to undertake Y?"

That's very interesting Thirteen but...and the 5 of Pentacles. For me it doesn't show anything related to good health, quite the opposite - two poor, sick-looking people? Isn't it weird this card is in the 'good health' suit?

I'm not good at these things but...i think that if you suspect there might a be a health problem showing in a reading, you should tell the person to go to look for a doctor. Health is serious thing.

You're quite right--and I apologize for not addressing that card. I spoke very generally when I said Pentacles were "good health." What I should have said was overall, Pentacles are good health. 5/pents, however, being about "physical" poverty, would certainly indicates that the person is going to be in poor health. A weak immune system, loss of blood, that sort of thing.

Likewise with Swords--4/Swords is often a card about rest and healing, and 6/Swords would likely indicate that one is over the worst and on their way to that other shore, abet with some lasting aches and pains. So, even though Swords are generally negative health-wise, they don't all have to be read that way.

YUoko, for me 5 pents means hard times/poor health. There are so many different decks now that sometimes the original old meanings get fogged I think. Just call me ming the old-fashioned ! lol
