I'm fairly sure you've got sugilite after looking at the scan you posted. Sugilite used to be considered rare (and most ebayers still call it that :D). It was originally discovered in Japan, and then a large amount was discovered in South Africa. Other places such as Canada have found it as well. I would consider it to be "hard to find" probably. This mineral is usually opaque (no light passes through), but can ocassionally be translucent. It can be purple, pink, brown or black, but generally the pink and the purple stones are the ones that are marketed. The deeper purple is the most cherished of all!

Thank You! That clears up that mystery! I bought it in the early 90's at a gem show with the idea that I would get it set into a pendant. Obviously, I never got around to taking it to a jeweller. (I wonder if I can buy a cap for it and set it myself...hmm)
