Some simple tarot craft tips

Nemia

I don't know whether this is the right place for this thread, but I want to share some very simple but nice things I made myself... to increase my enjoyment of tarot.

1. Tarot spread mats

I mentioned my spread mats already but here they are again. Now that I have the Deck of 1000 Spreads, I use them less, but I made them before I had that deck, when I was asked to enhance a friend's birthday tarotically.

I think now I could have done a nicer job but I was under time pressure and made nearly a dozen of those mats. I used an old art calendar (Gabriele Münter) and covered the pictures with golden acrylic colour, except for the places of the cards. Adding hand written stickers in two languages was not the best solution either. You can do a much much nicer job if you want to!

Nevertheless, I'm glad I made these mats. I know these spreads very well but having them on a mat is practical. I can pick one quickly, take a picture, and can leave the spread on my table for some time.

When I read for others, it's self explanatory, and like with the Deck of 1000 Spreads, permutations and other playful-serious alterations can be made with ease.

I can also use them for affirmations or reflections by not pulling a card but picking it consciously.

It's not the most original idea but well, there it is.

2. Tarot pendants

That's really simple. I bought glass bubbles and matching frames, and chose some much-beloved cards from the Tiny Universal tarot. I glued them on lovely backgrounds from my National Geographic collection - then glued them with Diamond Glaze under the glass bubble - and then glued the whole thing into the frame.

Easy and very nice. I gave away most of the results of my labours. It's not difficult to make them much more beautiful by adding stones and other talismans.

3. Tarot magnets

This was more work than you can see now. You need a Tiny Universal Tarot, sturdy cardboard, little magnets and diamond glaze or another good craft glue.

I glued all the cards on the cardboard so they don't bend. Cutting them all out was phew, a lot of work. I covered them with Diamond glaze because instead of lacque - I feel they'll keep better that way but you may not need that step. And then I stuck them all on little magnets.

Now I can play with them, move them, put them in groups - and have them in front of my eyes all the time.

They work very nicely with my also very-very-simple Tree of Life in glass drops.

I chose for each sephira a suitable glass drops (these very nice little drops are available everywhere and glass is such a wonderful material!), glued them on little magnet rings and arranged them like the Tree of Life.

I have a fridge in my study so I simply put all these magnetic things on the fridge. It's easy to combine the Tree of Life with the tarot cards. Okay, until somebody produces a Tiny Thoth, I'll have to make do with this Tiny RWS but it's okay. And I can play with it which I like. I like that better than a poster that I can only look at.

4. Display for my Deck of the Week

That's what I made today. My husband gave me for Rosh Hashana a table calendar that he got from some firm he works with. Not beautiful but with a very sturdy stand. I knew exactly that I want to make a tarot stand from it.

And it took me less than 5 minutes to do it.

I covered the writing on the cardboard with Tippex - if you have a calendar with more writing, maybe it's better to cover it with nice paper or spray colour on it.

I knotted some rubber bands and fixed them with a safety pin.

And that was it.

Again, if you're a perfectionist, you can stick transparent sheets or strips that hold your cards in place. I may do so sooner or later. But for now, the little thing does what I want it to do: keeps my daily card/s from my weekly deck in front of my eyes without damaging the cards like pins or blue tack might do.

Thank you for sharing all of these Neemia! I like how you've taken something you had and recycled it into something you wanted. You are a very creative woman! :)

These are really cute ideas! I love the idea of a tarot pendant-- my partner identifies with the Star and it would be a really cute gift!

You could also knit/crochet tarot bags and tarot mats for laying out spreads. :)

Yes! I'm currently thinking of making a crochet Lenormand GT cloth........
