Shadowscapes: Animals of the Shadowscapes

triple_entendre

The Shadowscapes Tarot was marketed as a fantasy, Asian/Celtic mythology deck-- not a flowers or animals deck. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see so many animals, just ordinary animals-- they didn't have to be dragons, shiisa, or unicorns to be magical.

Some replace the faces, like the spider in the Eight of Pentacles. Is that a coelacanth in the Page of Cups?

Mainly, though, it seems that certain animals represent an element in the deck.

Pentacles: chameleons (which, funnily enough, are always green in this deck and can be enormous)
Cups: carp and turtles
Wands: foxes
Swords: crows and swans

I believe that any time we see an animal, whether in physical form or in simply a picture, it most likely is significant in your life. Especially when you start seeing it more than once. I haven't known the symbolism of animal totems for very long. Here's what I've found out about the animals you just mentioned. You may or may not want to incorporate the animal into the reading :).

Chameleon: Clairvoyance
Chameleon gives their totem people the awareness of their own psychic ability and intuition. People with this totem are very sensitive to their environment and often are able to see auras around people. If you have a Chameleon totem, you need to trust what you feel and sense. Chameleon's color changes symbolize the inconstancy of life and the uncertainty of fortune, while its eyes see both the past and the future, giving its totem people the power of clairvoyance.

FISH
The fish is generally symbolic of decision and grace. The message of this graceful creature that dwells within water energy (emotions) is open-mindedness and decisiveness. Fish people are deeply psychic and heed their intuition (emotions and feelings) when making decisions, which may cause them to swim away from a situation until clear. The fish asks us to be sure that it is not fear holding us back from something that may be of great benefit to our lives. Peace is resumed when a decision is made, however you may change your mind guilt free, at any stage in your life.

Turtle: Mother Earth
Turtle is the oldest symbol for the Earth. It is the personification of goddess energy and the eternal Earth itself. If you have a Turtle totem, you must be mindful of returning to the Earth what she has given you. Honor the creative source within you. Use water and earth energies to create a harmonious flow in your life. Ask the Earth for assistance and her riches will pour forth. If a Turtle totem shows up in your life, slow down the pace of your life. Bigger, stronger, faster are not always the best ways to reach your goals. Turtle is fine teacher of the art of grounding. When you learn to ground yourself to Earth's power and strength, you place focus on your thoughts and actions and use the Earth's limitless energies rather than your own to accomplish your will.

Fox: Magic, Shapeshifting, Invisibility
A fox can teach you to control your aura so that you can be more in harmony with others and the world. If you have a fox totem, learning to be invisible is very important in your life. Imagine yourself blending in with your surroundings, becoming part of the background. Be very still and quiet. Through practice you can be unnoticed even at a party or in a crowd. A fox totem also teaches good eating habits; the fox eats small amounts frequently which medicine is now telling us is better for our health. But fox people already knew this.

Crow: Keeper of the Sacred Law
Crows are the keepers of the Sacred Law and to have a Crow totem is very powerful. Personal Integrity is your watchword and your guide in Life. If you have a Crow totem, your prime path is to be mindful of your opinions and actions. You must be willing to walk your talk, to speak your truth and to know your life's mission. Crow is an omen of Change. Things that you have been working toward will come to fruition when Crow appears. Crow lives in the void and has no sense of time; therefore, it sees past, present and future simultaneously. Crow merges both light and dark, both inner and outer. It is the totem of the Great Spirit and must be respected as such.

Swan: Grace, Beauty, Power of Self
The Swan is one of the most powerful and ancient of totems. As you begin to realize your own true beauty, you unfold the ability to bridge new realms and new powers. Swan can show you how to reveal the inner beauty within yourself and in others. A Swan totem heralds a time of altered states of awareness and the development of intuitive abilities. Swan people have the ability to see the future, and to accept the healing and transformation that is beginning in their lives. Accept your ability and go with the flow. Stop denying you know who is calling when the phone rings. Pay attention to your hunches and inner knowledge, and Swan medicine will work through you. The Swan's call teaches the mysteries of song and poetry, for these touch the child and the beauty within.

Oh and my "Messages from your animal spirit guides" book by Steven D Farmer, Spider is described as

Trust the creative spark you're feeling, and express it through writing stories that inspire and enlighten

The pulse of creativity is especially strong right now, triggering a not unfamiliar and compelling desire to express yourself through creative writing. Whether or not the tales you weave are true, whether they're based on actual experience or the imaginings of your fertile mind, each day sit yourself down and pour out the words that come to you. Don't ponder each sentence or paragraph; just write whatever wants to be written through you.

To inspire and enlighten others, you don't need a profoundly complex tale. Start by describing a personal experience, one where you gained some insight that may also be useful for others. However, don't focus on how people will respond to your story; instead, just enjoy the process of writing without judging your work or yourself. Write to express - not to impress.

In attempting to write, you may find yourself easily distracted, either with others' need for your time and attention or with those negative thoughts and beliefs that are the product of judgments and shame that you were subjected to during childhood. A powerful way to release these habitual and self-limiting thoughts and feeligns is to write about them in story form. As you do so, don't hold back anything. Through such a catharsis, you heal those words that had originally wounded you.
