Alta

One interesting thing is to look for shows by local rock hound groups. I found a wonderful one here last year, tons of stones, very reasonable and a good atmosphere. Look on the internet, they usually meet in mid summer to early fall.

The really big one is in Bancroft, I'll be going.

Bancroft is north of Belleville, near Stirling.

Google gemboree, or rock hound fair, or the like and add in Montreal and see what comes up. Try and find the name of local rock hound club and see what they have. It is the easier, cheapest and most fun way to get a nice selection of stones and relatively inexpensively.

Willing to drive to Ottawa? This is a terrific show!

"Crystal Sets"

I saw this on amazon.com, but do not know if the seller is reliable:

1. First suggestion
http://www.amazon.com/Pound-Smooth-Polished-Mixed-Gemstones/dp/B000YP11YA

2. A set with a softcover Judy Hall reference specific to 12 stones:

Scroll down until you get down to "Crystal Healing" pack from Godsfield Press--there's a set of 12 with a softcover book I've only seen in this pack. I've not bought the Crystal Bible/Crystal Zodiac book by Judy Hall set--but based on the small book that comes with these stones, I'll buy one soon. What I do have is the Crystal Healing pack with small stones and I like the idea of having 12 stones and the softcover reference to healing.

3. A smaller set with seven crystals and reference:

4. Something more expensive, but curiously interesting - a set of assorted stones with runes painted on them--you'd get a set of runes and assorted stones as well...scroll down to the set with assorted runestones.

http://www.enchantedforestwands.com/runes.html

I once saw the set with assorted stones and the runes engraved upon them in a bookstore and thought they were neat, but I wasn't into the runes then, so didn't buy them. I thought they were expensive at the time...but the set that I remember wasn't as much as $34.00...

Good luck--hope you find better options...these were just the ones that I was able to unearth as of now. I really liked the question, as I was hoping to find better resources myself.

Best wishes,

Cerulean

bluefairy,

Being in a large city, you're bound to have a Science museum, Natural History museum, etc.

In the gift shops, they usually sell tumbled stones, all you can stuff into a bag for about $5. I was usually able to get about ten stones into a bag. And they're in a giant bin so that you can choose the ones you love best. You'll find tiger eye, amethyst, sodalite, jaspers, quartz, hematite, citine, etc, It's a fun way to get a basic set of crystals that you yourself get to choose.
