Hermetic Tarot - The Lovers VI

caridwen

Children of the Voice Divine. Zain. Sword. Andromeda is shown chained to a rock and threatened by a dragon rising from the waters of stagnation. Perseus quickly wields a sword to protect her against the dragon.

At the upper right of this card appears the sign for Gemini. It is important to study this card along with card X1V. Temperance (Sagittarius) Card VI. The Lovers also pertains to Sagittarius - the Archer - hence the bow and arrow at the upper centre. Although the Lovers and Temperance are opposite cards they are also very closely and strongly connected.

Legend tells of how Perseus, returning from one of his many adventures, espied Andromeda chained to rocks in the midst of the sea, where she had been offered as sacrifice to the sea-monster that had ravaged the land of Ethiopia. One look was all it took for Perseus to be smitten by the maiden in distress and he charged to her rescue, His prize was Andromeda herself, who became his betrothed, and on their deaths they were placed in the sky as the constellations that today still bear their names.

This card seems to me to be all about making the choice of a partner to whom we will be united for life. It is the first card in Dowson's Tarot to feature more than one person (since 'Mercury/Hermes' in Trump of The Magician is merely a magical apparition). Its message seems to be that in our lives we are not destined to be alone, that the duality and balance that has appeared in previous cards must be made physically manifest, that only in a conjoining of opposites (here, of masculine and feminine) can a pairing be achieved that combines each of us into a stronger entity.

The Hebrew inscription on this card is a rendition of AMBRIEL the angel attributed to Gemini.
