RWS Tarot 101 King of Cups

King of Cups

When I look into the King of Cups I see a man sitting on a stone throne that is floating on water. This tells me he is a man of emotion but dose not show it to the outside world. A red (passion, desires) ship (travel, journey, or possible baggage) and a fish (emotion, intuition, creativity) are in the background. He wears a blue (freedom, sensitivity,) garment, covered by a yellow cape trimmed with red. He wears a crown, a necklace with a fish on it, and holds a cup in his right hand and a scepter in his left. Thread on Kings Mace (scepter)

He looks as if he is in control of his emotions, but the look on his face and stiff posture tells me he is hiding something. He is a man of controlled passion.

Direct: father, counselor, guide, teacher, emotionally stable (most of the time), sensitive, intuitive, keeps feeling to himself, enjoys life and family.

Reversed: not interested in fatherhood, lies, unfaithful, insensitive, controlling manipulative, unhappy relationship, time to move away from dependency, addictions.

I would say that he looks rather comfortable, or at least should be. The throne looks a bit like one of those really nice and comfortable arm chairs (I think my family may have had one that looked like that once upon a time, a nice red one, looked lovely and was very comfortable to sit in, almost the sort of feeling of not really wanting to get out of it ). If that is the case then I would probably have to say that family and home is important to him, he is more inclined to stay where he is comfortable and familiar with. I would hazard a guess to say that he is rather unwilling to go into "unchartered waters" in a manner of speaking.

Looks very much like a father figure to me ;)

By the look on his face is rather standoffish, in a manner of speaking, he would not be an easy person to get to know. But if you stick around, and gain his trust, then he might be more likely to open up, but even that is doubtful.

Despite what someone said in one of the threads, I do equate the King of Cups with cardinal water, hence Cancer. Which the above description is very much what you would expect from a Cancerian.

He is knowledgeable about emotions, and as such, due to his experiences, and perhaps the fact that he is pyschic as well, would be a perfect candidate to counsel and offer advice to those who have been suffering. He needs to somehow shield himself from the psychic onslaught as it were, and it is something that he has possibly mastered.

The eyes of the King of Cups

For people who use the RWS tarot from AGM Urania edition (the one with a yellow box), have you ever noticed the eyes of the King of Cups ?

His pupils look like feline's eyes, two thin black cracks.

I've checked the King of Cups in the original RWS (the one with a blue and salmon box) and this detail isn't that obvious even if his pupils don't look really normal in this deck too.

In some way, it gives him something supernatural. A kind of ability to see under the surface of things and reveal what is hidden.

Finally, it suits his characteristics very well.

What do you think ?
