Anna K. Study - Knight of Cups

Marirowana

The knight of cups is standing in the bright and crips air of the night, in front of a wall (hard to see on the card, but it is there). There are no clouds, only a splendid starry sky. His clothes are blue, the colour of water. On his chest he proudly wears the symbol of his suit, a cup. His arms and legs are protected with scale chain mail, so he must be an important figure in the army*.

On his way to his appointment, he found a rosebush under a tree. This must be a romantic rendez-vous, right? At least he is sure it is, he better takes some roses for her (or him).
He is so in love that the beauty and smell of the roses touch him deep. He doesn’t even feel the stinging thorns of the roses. He is almost completely swallowed by the moment.

In the distance, we see a cosy tavern, or is it a large house? The lights inside are shining, the last part of the path is lit. There are plumes of smoke coming out of the chimney, it is nice and warm inside. He is clearly on his way to the building.

Knights are about movement, action, taking things to the extreme. He doesn’t think of the consequences if his intentions are different from hers, he is just diving in – it is an emotional or intuitive decision. He is an emotional person, but he can rush things too much sometimes. He must be careful – his heart remains unprotected by the chainmail armor, it can easily be ripped apart by whomever he allows to touch it.

I once read a description of this knight, saying ‘he might be in love with love itself’. I think this fits the image very well. I feel like shouting to him, “Dude! Man up!” ;)

Anna K. writes that this card can also be about approaching the enemy peacefully. It is a little harder to fit that in the image (to bring roses is still a whole different level than approaching the enemy peacefully). I think we can take ‘enemy’ in a very large context here, it could be any emotional or physical obstacle we encounter.

*Scale mail armor
Phrased from Wikipedia said:
While several types of armor existed in the Roman legion, the lorica plumata was reserved for the use of military leaders (Tribunes and above, but typically Generals) due to the high cost of production, and maintenance. The name the Romans used for this type of armor is not known, lorica plumata being a descriptive term applied by modern scholars, referring to its resemblance to a bird's plumage.

The lorica plumata was basically a mail shirt with small feather-like scales attached to the rings. Requiring skilled labor and much time to create, this would have been an expensive piece of military equipment. And while many contest its utility on the field, it might have been used by Roman leaders due to its impressive appearance and its possible impact on the morale of soldiers

So the knight is an important figure in the battlefield, the only other person wearing this type of scale mail is the King of Pentacles. It is partly just ostentation, he wants to look good for his friends an dangerous for his enemies. It can’t be easy to be highly emotional and succeed as a General at the same time, he needs to protect his reputation in some way.
